Matthew cut from MasterChef

Sydney accountant Matthew Caldicott has been cut from MasterChef, after naming apricot jam as dried apricot.

Sydney accountant Matthew Caldicott has been cut from MasterChef.

Caldicott, 21, met his match with a carrot cake cooked by judge George Calombaris.

In a taste test he incorrectly named dried apricot as one of 16 possible ingredients. But the cake had apricot jam.

His elimination follows being lauded for his dish in this week’s team challenge. But his team lost, putting him in a taste test opposite Claire, Marion, Alvin and Jonathan.

“I guess it is a little ironic,” says Matthew. “I was shattered when the judges told me I was eliminated and I knew it was all over, red rover. All those months of hard work came to an end all because of one word.

“I knew eggs were in it as I’m sure nearly every cake has eggs in it,” explains Matthew. “I then said apricots as there were little slivers on top of the cake. When the judges asked me to specify I freaked out and said the first thing in my head which was dried apricots, but it was apricot jam.”

Earlier today his elimination was leaked by a Sydney newspaper.

  1. its really comes down to who the judges think most australians will warm too. last years winner wasnt really the best chef but the judhes thought she could sell the most books as mothers would relate to her.
look for that moreso then the best chef..

  2. @brissyguy – that’s not true. Joanne actually takes responsibility for things that are not even her fault. Case in point – the P&O Cruise team challenge. She took responsibility for not deboning the salmon quickly. If I remember Aaron was the one who completely lost it in that team challenge.

  3. The look on Matts face when he was eliminated was so sad I really felt for the guy. But he seems to be doing well now so good on him.

And Jono aka The Eliminator survives elimination #6!

  4. @Brissyguy.. Totally agree with you about Jo… She always does the cop out when it suits her,,, and yes she should have gone many times… but it is also smart of the producers to keep someone in the comp that most viewers hate…

@Timmy.. please unfriend us all and move on to another website… you have been voted off … the site has spoken…

  5. It’s a shame to see him go, there are definitely weaker contestants remaining. I personally think that Joanne has more lives than a bloody cat. I think she’s being shaped up as the Joolie Goodwin of this season. She takes no blame for things when things go wrong in the team challenges and will take the credit when things go right.

I suspect they’ll bring some wildcards back again later on in the competition – and Matthew will be one – if he’s getting work experience from Alex perry (apologies if the name is wrong).

  6. Yeah.. Poor Matthew.. He has gone from being a nobody accountant to being trained by Neil Perry… Hello.!!! Good on him and all the best to him….

  7. Has there been a Taste Test loser who hasn’t tripped up when they also had other ingredients up their sleeve? The key is: if you recognise it, say it. Don’t try to be cunning!

  8. So two of the youngest contestants disappear in a week. I wonder if the producers set a few traps to catch them specifically. They can’t really crown a 20/21 year old MasterChef, they’re still kids.

  9. lol.. david, you must get so sick of people asking you not to have spoilers. You’re doing your best mate, and honestly.. if people don’t want to know what’s been happening on their favourite show before they get a chance to see it, then they shouldnt be going to such websites as “TV Tonight” till after they’ve seen it.

As for matthew, it would be so hard first of all being evicted cos of other peoples initial mistakes, but then also for saying the correct ingedient, but just wrong style. Poor guy. Hope he makes a come back in later weeks lol

    1. Alex: Yes. I’ve been very clear and very consistent. Crazy how people reckon I spoiled things in Twitter. A quick Twitter search proves otherwise. The basic fundamental “to spoil” equates to something that hasn’t been broadcast. Once it has aired it shifts to News.

  10. that’s just ‘reality’ isn’t it David?

but even beyond that i just felt it was constructed differently to normal eliminations. even compared to Alvin and Skye the other week, this time they had everyone mentioning it. i dunno it just seemed very constructed that way. perhaps it was just me…

  11. They are dropping like flies – seriously, why would you choose something as risky as dired apricots when you are 100% certain of another ingredient?

  12. hey David, I know you save spoilers until after it’s aired, but could you save the specifics for people who click on the link? e.g. on twitter you could say “Latest Masterchef evictee is…” and not name the person.

Just a suggestion, don’t make me unfriend you!

    1. Timmy, alas no.

I can’t run a site that logs TV news (and frankly competes with a lot of other online media) that continually runs headlines saying “Latest evictee is” / “Somebody won Biggest Loser” / “Dancing with the stars lost another dancer this week.” I offer Twitter as an auto feed for those who wish to follow the site, not the other way around.

What about every other Twitter user that mentioned Matthew’s elimination before me? How are you going to stop them?

  13. cant say im disappointed. he was way to cocky… even to the end! just that look on his face and they way he talked about it, at least everyone else was nervous and thought about things, he just got ahead of himself…

as for the way they showed callum afterwards it was like it was a relationship break up. not saying they were together but it was constructed in the way they show the grieving partner in other shows (ie big brother, Survivor, Top Chef)

    1. In an intense ride like this no doubt emotions do run high, but I reckon there is also an expectation that “we need to show you’re upset for your mate please” weighing into it too….
