Following on from hints that he would be leaving NBC comedy The Office, Steve Carell has now confirmed the 2010-2011 season will be his last.

“I just think it’s time,” he told EOnline. “I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go.

“It doesn’t certainly mean the end of the show. I think it’s just a dynamic change to the show, which could be a good thing, actually. Add some new life and some new energy…I see it as a positive in general for the show.”

Carell added that the ensemble and the writing is strong, which has seen new characters and storylines introduced into the mix that it could survive his exit.

  1. They will be able to continue it. Criminal Minds did well without Mandy Patinkin, and CSI changed leads without much backlash. Not sure if comedies have done it before but I’m sure its happened, and I say the cast and writing IS strong enough for it to last another 3 years. Dwight, Jim, Pam, Ryan, Andy and the gang have more than enough chemistry and stories between them to continue the show.

  2. I never really got into the show with how TEN has treated it, guess there are always the DVDs.

I do agree that loosing the lead character I hope it doesn’t try to go on without him, aka Scrubs!

  3. it is very courteous of him to give such long term notice, hopefully enough time for the writers to structure the show so it is ok without him. most shows do notsurvive these situations but it is not impossible.

  4. I hope to god they finish up the show in the 7th season.

Last few seasons haven’t been as good as the first few but have still been enjoyable.

Without Carell the show is gonna be one big mess.

  5. Sorry Steve, but no you = no show. The writing may be good, and the characters great too, but take away the main character the show revolves around, and it becomes a watered down piss-poor version of the real thing … would be like NCIS without Gibbs, or House without House.

Hopefully NBC will throw some more $$ at him or something to get him to stay.

  6. F you Steve Carell. You give us the most brilliant laughs for us in the past six years then piss off!! how dare you!!! I’d rather them end the show.

  7. It was kind of obvious. He’s been saying this for a while now. It was practically confirmed in my head when they said they were gonna bring Holly back next year.

No Carell means no Office for me either. Whilst I love the other characters, they should just end the show on a high and not ruin its rep.

  8. I assume they could Jim take over the offfice, or Kathy Bates, or simply end the show.

Keeping the show on with the lead really does a disservice to the series…(scrubs, spin city, etc).

  9. Nope, The Office was too centered around Michael Scott, it’s fine if he had a very small role from time to time in episodes, but he has to remain the heart and soul of hte show, ER pretty much ran on fumes and momentum without Anthony Edwards, Happy Days wasn’t the same after Ron Howard left, and Moonlighting just wasn’t the same when Cybill Shepherd took long sabbaticals.

It would screw over NBC if they don’t find a genuine show this upcoming season, because The Office was really NBC’s only genuinely competitive show outside of football.

  10. As a big fan of the show, I think it’s about time to wrap it all up.
If they do continue beyond Carell, the boss needs to be a complete departure from Steve’s character.

  11. Hopefully the next season is a lot better than the last, I also hope their tease of Holly coming back happens. I won’t bother watched after he leaves though. I have always felt shows should go out on top, don’t drag it kicking and screaming to it’s death.

  12. I don’t think, despite Steve’s best hopes, the show will survive his exit. While the new additions are great and the original ensemble remains strong, the show still revolves around the idiotic Michael Scott. It’s his show and without a boss of equal stupidity and vanity, who are they meant to bounce off?

  13. Like the show a lot, but I am not too worried about this. Yes the writers could mess up the show, but they’ve been pretty good. I have often found his character to be the weakest. They started off trying to have the character be too many things. It never felt like a consistent character. One episode he’s a ignorant, selfish childish moron, the next he’s a great niave guy who is good at his job. They got better at the balance but it never quite worked. Although he was funny most of the time.

Where they go from here.. who knows but the writers seem pretty good. Characters like Andy who is one of the best ones was an addition. Replacing the boss will be hard, so I guess they’ll begin to focus more on those in the office than one lead.
