Bumped: Australia Versus, The Apprentice

Seven has reacted swiftly to the dismal reception for Australia Versus, moving it to 10:30pm after just one week.

Well that didn’t take long…

Seven has reacted swiftly to the dismal reception for Australia Versus, moving it to 10:30pm after just one week.

In TV terms for a new local production, that is the equivalent of giving up any hope.

The show hosted by Tim Ross managed just 623,000 viewers on Tuesday night, despite the whopping lead-in of 1.8m viewers from Packed to the Rafters.

Yesterday some media were even asking if it was the “worst show ever.”

In its place Seven will play new episodes of Ghost Whisperer from next week.

The Apprentice (UK) will move to 11:30pm as a result.

Seven’s light entertainment year has been dogged by misfiring new formats with The White Room and The Bounce both removed off air.

In the case of Australia Versus, the show is produced by FremantleMedia Australia -but still Seven couldn’t find success.

  1. Nice to see all the Parenthood love here.

Just hope someone from Seven is listening and they start promoting the show, they have 13 eps with would talk them nicely up to the new season in September and then if it’s a hit (which it should be) then can somewhat fast track the 2nd season until the end of the year… yeah now I know I’m dreaming LOL

BTW sorry for the double post earlier.

  2. I agree with the other posters: Put Parenthood on after Rafters. They’re crazy not to. Parenthood is a really solid enjoyable show.

But I wish Channel 7 would do more proper comedy shows. Not rip off formats but proper original programming like Kath & Kim…even a sketch show but starring only talented writer/performers.

  3. @ koverstreet: That’s not necessarily true. The Matty Johns Show, a lite football-based variety entertainment show has done considerably well. The problem with Australia Verses, is that it’s too similar to other shows (such as 9’s twenty2One). Ten had a big failure last year when they launched “the spearman show”, a horrible take on Twenty2One.

I think 7 just haven’t put enough thought into their shows, they’re being too lazy and hoping that somehow a cheaply produced copycat show will someone pick up a big audience and thus turn in a big profit. Clearly doesn’t work.

  4. Why is that Nine and TEN do light entertainment/variety so well but Seven consistently struggles? Is part of the reason the fact that Seven has to be so family friendly ie boring while Nine and TEN push the envelope and aren’t so restricted?

  5. Dave Thornton may become the Ted McGinley of Australian television. First the White Room, now Australia Vs. One more and I think he’d have the title.

  6. Damn and I was hoping Parenthood finally might get a shot, but if still to see a single announcement that they even have the rights to the show. Most people in this country wouldn’t even know of it’s existence but it was one of the best performing new shows of the year for NBC. At this rate I’m starting to thing it will go strait to 7TWO at some time in the distant future… thanks a lot Seven.

And yes I’m going to keep going on about Parenthood until someone here or at Seven hears me!!!

  7. When I saw the ads for this I thought ‘even if this is a one off special, it’s really going to struggle’. It looks like a cheap rip off of the spearman project, which was a cheap rip off of 20to1 (which I was surprised that it ever took off).

  8. It just looked trashy. If it was a spicks and specks type format and it took the form of a debate where each team is 3-4 people and various points debated, with each member of the studio audience awarding their point to team-australia or team-versus.

Damn, that wasn’t actually a bad idea, if i may say so myself 🙂
Channel 7 : call me! lol

  9. Prehaps Seven should have thrown a double episode of Rafters next week and promoted the hell out of Parenthood and Launch it Tuesday 20th July.

  10. How is moving it to 10.30 going to make it more popular? Just get rid of it.
I thought Ghost Whisperer was a 7Two show now? Or maybe thats just repeats only…

  12. Good move.
“Australia Versus” was the most fatuous comparison/ranking show
I’ve ever seen…forthcoming questions might as well include
“Who has the fluffiest navel… Australia or XYZland?”
It’s that banal, & is actually quite insulting to the intelligence of all
    concerned. 🙂

  13. Surely someone realised “Australia Versus” was total fail before it even got into the studio? I mean, sheesh, that one 30-second promo was all the convincing I needed that it was the most badly-judged show concept since that Magda disaster.

It seems the Bogan TV genre is slowly dying. Thank goodness for that.
