Red Faces, gay jokes, dancing poodles and Tony Abbott

It's not called Red Faces for no reason. Tony Abbott kept smiling as Entourage star Rex Lee dropped the gay jokes.

There were dancing poodles, cute kids, elderly comedians and Kylie Minogue, but it was Opposition Leader Tony Abbott sitting beside openly gay Entourage star Rex Lee on Red Faces that seemed to encapsulated live television.

Abbott tried hard at being relaxed on the light entertainment show, constantly upstaged by the Hey Hey team with a phony “worm”, funny photos of him and cartoons from Andrew Fyfe. But what else would you expect when attending the show?

Some in the crowd booed his entrance.

He even kept up the smiles as Entourage star Rex Lee dropped several gay references in his judging comments.

When Abbott judged the dancing dogs and said “I love animals,” Lee added, “I love men and I love animals!”

He even repeated it a second time.

Abbott has previously said homosexuality challenges the right order of things.

“I probably feel a bit threatened, as so many people do. It’s a fact of life,” he once told 60 Minutes.

As if Abbott hadn’t already felt upstaged, sour judge Red Symons gave just 1 pt to a quartet of tiny girls, branding them “Untalented” and “Precocious.”

  1. sigh…just once I’d like to see Daryl Not reminisce about the good old days.
And please stop handing out those ‘Honourary Cast Member’ plaques.

  2. Car crash telly at it’s best (or worst)….. hmm, reminds me of the Logies. Clearly, if anything he should have done “celebrity heads” instead… although his first question probably would have been “Am I Julia Gillard?” and the game would be over and won very quickly.

  3. I only watched the show for Kylie too… (David, don’t suppose they do a ratings breakdown by sexuality do they? ;))

And I think it was a bad move for Tony to be on the show with the queen of gays, an audience full of gays, and Rex Lee…

The audience booing Mr Abbott was the highlight of the show for me (Along with Rex’ comments)… Well, until my mate ended up running on stage, hugging Kylie, and standing behind Daryl Somers with the cast as he announced the show was coming back on Saturdays…

  4. looking at the comments below, has there been an announcement that the show is going back to Saturday nights? I know it’s been speculated, and Daryl said in a radio interview that he’d like to go back to Saturday, but is it actually happening?

  5. thank god i was cooking at the time. next thing you know Julia will be a guest judge on dancing with the stars…you heard it here…and if it don’t hapen. you didnt hear it.

  6. Really good episode tonight and so so happy that it will be back on Saturday Nights, away from all the competition the rival networks have offered and back on the night that suits everyone. There will definitely be a lot of people that will be happy with this announcement and I am sure that the ratings for the first Saturday show will prove how much people really do want the show on Saturdays.

  7. Kylie was amazing on Hey Hey tonight – awesome performances.
    She looked stunning too.
I was lucky enough to meet Kylie before the show, she’s so lovely 🙂

  8. Only episode of Hey Hey I’ve watched all year. Tonight was a reminder why. At least when it gets moved to Saturday it won’t feel like a rude interruption to my week. Tony Abbott (who deserved every boo he got) should fire whoever in his team suggested he go on Red Faces. Too many chances for him to offend someone or to have jokes made about him. Complete moron.

  9. I only ep of Hey Hey I watched all the way through. I could’nt help but smile whe the audience booed Tony Abbott.

…and Kylie’s Get Outta My Way performance was amazing.

  10. Another bad move by the Liberal Party campaign machine. On top of the Entourage star Kylie Minogue was on the panel and many of her biggest fans (i.e. gay man) were in the audience so gave Tony plenty of booes. Not a great look.

  11. How funny was that… laughed my head off.

And what about the four little girls performing… could have sworn they were Brendon Favola’s kids…

    Spooky.

  12. Abbott should have been gonged for being boring and unfunny and not even remotely entertaining..I wished Rex Lee had asked Abbott if he feel threatened sitting next to a gay man?
