Helpmann Awards: TV nominees

Bliss, RocKwiz, Wil Anderson, Kitty Flanagan, and Fame the Musical are among some of the nominees in this year's Helpmanns.

The country’s top theatrical awards, the Helpmann Awards will air on STVDIO in September.

Yesterday nominees for 42 categories were announced.

There were several television names to be found amongst the nominees, headed up by Opera Australia’s Bliss, which received a live broadcast on ABC2.

It is nominated the Best Opera award, along with a performing nominations for Peter Coleman-Wright, Lorina Gore, Barry Ryan, Taryn Fiebig plus Best New Australian Work, Best Original Score, Best Direction of an Opera, Best Lighting Design , Best Sound Design and Best Scenic Design.

Slumdog Millionaire comproser A. R. Rahman, whose free Sydney Festival concert Jai Ho! was also given an ABC2 broadcast, is in the running for Best Special Event.

The RocKwiz National Tour is nominated for Best Australian Contemporary Concert

Nominees for Best Comedy Performer include Wil Anderson, Kitty Flanagan and Fiona O’Loughlin.

Other TV names include Michala Banas (Avenue Q) for Best Female Actor in a Musical, Geoffrey Rush (The Drowsy Chaperone) Best Male Actor in a Musical, Toby Schmitz (Ruben Guthrie) Best Male Actor in a Play, Deborah Kennedy (The Book of Everything) and Alison Whyte (Richard III) for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play, and Kelley Abbey (Fame The Musical) for Best Choreography in a Musical.

David Campbell will host the awards airing at 8.30pm AEST on Monday 6 September on STVDIO.

  1. You can enjoy the Helpmann’s again this year on channel 132. The live telecast can be seen at 8.30 on Monday 6 September and that week you can watch STVDIO all week without subscribing to the extra package. Check it out.

  2. Usually enjoy the Helpmann Awards but they’ve been on the Bio Channel the last few years. I don’t have that new channel that took place of Ovation. Not paying 6 bucks a month for a channel I’d hardly watch.
