Axed: Lone Star

US drama Lone Star has become the first casualty of the US Fall season, axed after just two episodes have aired.

The drama, about a con man leading a double life, will cease production with five episodes under its belt. It starred James Wolk, Adrianne Palicki, David Keith and Jon Voight.

Only 4.1 million viewers tuned in for the premiere, with equally poor demographics. It dropped to 3.2 million viewers in its second outing.

Last week creator Kyle Killen practically begged viewers to give the show a try.

“For us to survive we’re going to have to pull off a minor miracle. Statistically, new shows tend to lose viewers in their second week. We’re aiming to gain them. In fact, screw it, let’s just double our audience,” he wrote online.

“The good news is, our audience was so small that if my Mom AND my Dad watch it we’ll pretty much be there.”

FOX will replace the series with new Lie to Me.

TEN had flagged Lone Star as part of its 2011 slate.

  1. It’s an interesting idea, but I think the lead was miscast. I know they were going for the nice guy next door type and trying to play against conman stereotyping, but he didn’t feel dynamic/watchable enough to me. Still, shame it hasn’t done better. Hope we do get to see the remaining episodes.

  2. @ David Knox – Nothing important, but why do you always spell it as ‘fastrack’. I’ve always read it spelled ‘fast track’? Just asking…

  3. Yep, best show of the bunch this season, of course nobody will give it a chance. Really enjoyed those first two eps, hopefully the rest of the unaired eps will be able to seen somewhere (although i think there will be only a couple).

  4. Hey,

Just on programming David – didn’t know where to ask this.

Any news on when US shows such as Bones (which have just started in the US) will return to Seven? Any fast-tracking planned?

Though after 7’s effort fast-track Bones last year, I’m not too sure it’s a good thing…

    Thanks !

    1. Fastracking and Programming is show by show, so I can’t give you a stock standard answer. ie. Amazing Race tomorrow night. Haven’t heard specifically about Bones, but remember Comm Games upsets everything. TV Lounge is best place for questions if you can’t find a post to fit.

  5. Very, very disappointing. Lone Star was easily the best of the bunch, but it’s easy to see why it didn’t catch on just because of how tricky it would be to advertise.

A con artist with a double life, two women he loves, who’s working a con on an oil company, but wants to go straight… it’s not exactly “look there’s a big explosion!”

  6. i thought the trailer for this looked really good. and critics loved it but lots of critics also said it was not commercial tv material and should have been made for cable. shame more americans didn’t atleast give it a shot. but there is no denying those ratings. it must be one of the bigest Fall flops in years. a 1.3 for ep1 and 1.0 for ep2 in that timeslot is terrible. i might have expected such a disaser for NBC or ABC but not FOX.
