Ben Cousins for new footy show

Update: As tipped, retired footballer Ben Cousins joins Seven's next AFL show, Game Day Prime Time.

Will Ben Cousins be revealed as part of Seven’s next AFL show?

Seven is poised to announced its line-up for Game Day Prime Time, a new AFL show to begin at 7:30pm next Thursday in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The show will take a more serious tone than the entertainment format of The Bounce. It has been developed by the team behind AFL Game Day, currently hosted by Hamish MacLachlan. Seven is yet to confirm if McLachlan will be hosting or who the commentating team comprises.

The new show promises to have a youthful edge. It will air during the AFL finals, and if successful resume in 2011.

Cousins retired from AFL and is understood to be pursuing media opportunities. His controversial two part documentary was a big ratings winner for Seven, followed by a test-drive of the new Game Day Prime Time in discussing the Cousins doco.

Seven has already recruited a number of ‘bad boys’ to its productions this year – could Cousins be next?

TV Tonight hears Seven may reveal its line-up for the show as soon as tomorrow.

UPDATE: Ben Cousins is now confirmed for the new-look show, plus Hamish McLachlan, Tom Harley, Matthew Richardson and Jason Akermanis, who will feature in a segment titled Aker Attack.

  1. I work at 7 and i have to tell you i’m no fan of drug takers and 7 making them stars and of GD moving to prime time. The host doesn’t have what it takes to pull it off and the producers, well there’s antoher story. 7 can’t make a footy show. And dont start me on 7Mate??? How ocker and embarrasing…
Many top execs got paid way too much over too expensive lunches to come up with that shocker!! Seriously what a joke!

  2. Why cant we watch it in QLD ? Channel 7, 71,72 & now 73, & we still cant get to watch it up here.Something is wrong…Oh well at least we still get the Footy Show,
    on 9…Channel 7 sux anyway.

  3. Yeah agreed Hamish is a pretty poor host. He’s not good on Game Day at all, but he gets the gig cos of his brother. And get rid of bloody Aker. No one cares about him, no one wants to hear him. Bugger him off altogether.

  4. couple questions:
-hasnt pretty much every AFL related program on 7 been cancelled or just gone without notice?
-do 7 think coz Ben Cousin’s is on it, that gets rid of any failure?
-Who the hell is Hamish McLaughlan anyway? (what does he have to do with anything :S) and why is he on every attempt to AFL shows 7 shoves down our throat??

when does 7’s contract with the footy rights end?? 🙂

  5. Dennis commetti would be good, However i have not seen him host any kind of show ever. Maybe in his early years but not over the last 2 decades. I think sandy roberts would be good the only show he is doing is Footy Flashbacks. I do think he needs to get involved with the more updated AFL stories and matches. Or maybe bruce should just get the green light. Just on my previous comment the show should be called Talking Footy again Yess that right talking footy even Game Day Primetime is a crap name because of the word Day in it. Does not make sense. Although these days the decisions that Tv networks make often dont make sense full stop.

  6. The difference between Ben Cousins and the other “bad boys” is that his behaviour wasn’t aimed at anyone else, aside from the pain he no doubt caused friends and family, he was essentially hurting himself.

@kelly clark So anyone who has had a drug problem shouldn’t be allowed to get a job? And being able to work is a “reward”? You might note that, aside from being much-loved, Ben is one of the best players to have ever played AFL. Do you also boycott Tigers and West Coast games because they “rewarded” Ben by letting him play? Or in fact all games, seeing as the AFL let him play? In such case they are unlikely to miss your viewership.

  7. I can’t understand how that guy Hamish gets a gig. His only endearing quality is that he’s not Bruuuuuuuce how would have to be the most annoying commentator on TV.

  8. 7 are desperate aren’t they. there must be a better person to host the thing than Hamish MacLachlan. everyone at 7 reckon he is the next big thing. well we all know how delusional those people are
