Seven hits back at “lying” claims by Corinne Grant

It's not often a network spokesperson is forced to cry foul on one of their own, but that's what's happened between Today Tonight vs Corinne Grant.

The Seven Network has hit back at comedian Corinne Grant who claims Today Tonight “lied” to her in an interview on Tuesday night.

Yesterday Grant turned to Twitter to let fly at Today Tonight after the interview painted her as a celebrity hoarder, with footage of extreme hoarders and overflowing backyards. The footage was intercut with statements from Grant talking about her book Lessons in Letting Go.

“Interview was s’posed 2 about how only hoarders shown on TV are extreme ones & that my book is about the hoarder in all of us,” she wrote.

“My book is about ordinary everyday hoarders, not the 5% ones that they made me out to be. They did a dodgy on me!”

But Seven has since told TV Tonight Grant was aware of the angle of the story.

“Corrine’s problem is not only with hoarding – she also has a memory problem,” fired a Network spokesperson.

“She and her publicist were involved in the planning and execution of the story, at every appropriate stage.

“She was told exactly how the story was being portrayed.”

Grant didn’t deny she had been a hoarder, having referred to the habit in a stand-up show and her new book.

“I collected everything -all my old pencils, all my old pencil cases, all my old school bags all of my old school clothes, all of my socks, couple of wisdom teeth,” she told reporter Georgia Main.

“I think most hoarders know it’s a deep dark secret and you spend a lot of your life hiding it from other people. It’s a bit like being a drug addict.”

However her Tweets indicate an issue with the context of her former habit, with Today Tonight‘s promo teasing about a mystery ‘Celebrity Hoarder’ combined with footage of extreme hoarders.

“It made me look like one of those hoarders you see on extreme shows and like I’d gone to them to ‘confess my shame’. Good lord!”

However Seven says Grant spoke openly about the issue.

“Corrine spoke a lot more about her hoarding problem – and that is all on tape.”

The war of words between Seven and Grant is rare given she is a Presenter for Seven’s own Air Ways. A new series is yet to air on Seven, creating a frosty atmosphere for both network and Presenter to promote the series.

The story also aired on the same night as a story on A Current Affair about an extreme hoarder.

Seven was sticking to its guns in defending the top-rating Today Tonight and reporter Georgia Main.

“The reporter involved is distressed at the mistruths Corinne Grant is happily tweeting away with,” the spokesperson said.

Grant is co-hosting The Circle on TEN today.

  1. Today Tonight does the usual standard of gutter pretend journalism, Corrine Grant tries to raise the profile of her and Today Tonight by pretending to complain about a pretend story on a pretend TV show about a pretend comedian who pretends to hoard.

I agree with the other posters: Corrine Who?

  2. Today Tonight is completely rubbish and I still can’t believe the amount of people that watch the drivel and severe cross promotion with 7 programmes. Come on guys head outdoors instead of watching propaganda wrapped on the guise of “current affairs”

  3. Some of you are so cool you don’t even know who Corinne is. So cool!
Those of us who do care realise that this is about a much bigger issue regarding Seven’s constant misrepresentation and exploitation of people for their own personal gain, ie. money.

  4. In shock news, Today Tonight are so used to beating up stories, they’re not even aware that they’re doing it. If they actually had quotes where she admitted her house was so full of junk it needed to be bulldozed rather than that she kept her “old school clothes and wisdom teeth” then they should have used them.

@Nathan Oh yes, very clever. If you don’t know who Corinne is, you’re probably at the wrong website. Move along.

  5. Who is running Seven?? Hiring bad boys to host show, now they always seem to denying everything, to the Mike Duffy Commonweath Games setup, to the mis representation of Corinnne Grant story.

Seven have always manipulated promos making the story bigger than what it really is. Someone has to step in a give Seven a massive fine over these recent events.

  6. @Allie, thanks for the calm, rational response. Spot on.
Can someone explain how it is that ACA and TT constantly run stories on exactly the same topics each night? I’m presuming they guard the rundowns of their programs so how is it that this happens over and over?

  7. Andy: “They don’t just do guest interviews and advertorials.”
errrr I’m pretty sure they do! Last night they did a promotional piece for Xbox Kinect apparently.

  8. The fact remains that TT did misrepresent her in the story. No amount of spin can deny that. The intro to the story was very misleading (footage of a filthy house and yard with the voiceover about a “mysterious celebrity hoarder”)The interview with her was interspliced with footage of a home strewn with garbage three feet high. It was not Corinne’s home!!!! Come on, Seven, that is clearly misleading!!!!! Corinne made it quite clear that she is not an extreme hoarder, which is a serious psychiatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  9. The issue here is she went on a current affairs show to promote a book. Today Tonight isn’t Hey Hey It’s Saturday. They don’t just do guest interviews and advertorials. They had to make the story about an issue… the subject was hoarding. Job done!

  10. Seems that lately Seven believes that Seven is right and everybody else is wrong.

I guess years of telling fibs does often tend to make one believe one’s own fibs.
