Bumped (again): The Event

Another change to The Event as numbers drop and Seven shufles in more more Criminal Minds.

Last week Seven sent through an amendment that The Event would be airing at 9:30pm from next Monday.

But yesterday it sent an another, to push it out to 10:30pm instead.

No doubt much of that was driven by Monday’s ratings of 642,000 viewers.

Now it will play double episodes of Criminal Minds from 8:30pm.

As a result Sexiest Women Of The World and That 70’s Show are out.

Coincidentally, The Event yesterday received its “back nine” order from NBC. Law & Order: Los Angeles and Outsourced also received full season orders.

Amended.

  1. Ahh the recipe for failure, bump it and delay it more than a week after the US. If I could have put money on this result I sure would have.

While the jury may still be out regarding the expected lifespan of The Event the networks still don’t recognise that their product needs to be sold to the customer even when we aren’t paying for it directly.

  2. I agree that “The Event” hasn’t been setting the TV on fire but I thought this wk’s Ep was a def improvement. I’m still gonna watch it but Seven have lost me as a viewer.

It opened in the US to 11.1M and has been averaging 9.1M up until Oct 11 (this wk’s Ep for us). This is a drop of about 18% and is not unusual for this type of show after after casual lookers have satisfied their curiosity. Ratings in Australis have mirrored the US, running at about 10% of their total numbers.

This wk’s number of 642K is aberrant and I think is a result of being up against Sherlock as well as some people abandoning the show after Seven’s announcement that they were going to bump it.

NBC obviously have faith that their numbers will hold up. Seven must have seen the drop of 2 million and thought “if we lose 2 million viewers, the ratings will be negative!” Seven have acted prematurely and without just cause. Bumping it to 10:30 will cripple the show’s ratings like Seven stuffed Lost.

  3. @alvar – it dropped since the pilot but I think it’s stabilized now, plus it’s doing fantastic numbers when PVRs are added. Can’t be doing too bad since NBC gave it a full season.

  4. I knew it, The Event is following suit with FlashForward. The first episode of both of those shows had solid ratings but deteriorated in ratings as it progresses, had a 8:30pm, then a 9:30pm and now a 10:30pm start. When we will see it start at 11:30pm, and be cancelled?

  5. Not a very solid show, not surprised this happened

It lacked the originality and spark of shows like Heroes and Prison Break in their first seasons. I expected more from the executive producer of 24

  6. Move it to 7mate and leave it on at a respectable time. I’d watch it there. As it is playing it later and later means I’m more likely to record it – and skip the ads.

  7. i think they should have moved it to a double episode Wed 8:30 on 7two where it can easliy bump out what is there, won’t clash with the other 7 channels or the competiton, and would be more fasttracked.

  8. @milk crate – ‘back 9’ refers to a show getting the remained of it’s full 22 eps season. Most shows get 13 eps at the start of the season and depending on ratings only get the rest if they perform enough for the studio/tv network to justify holding on to them for the whole season.

  9. @milk crate

US networks usually order a pilot plus 12 episodes of a new series to make an intial order of 13 episodes. If they are happy with how it is going they will order a “back nine” to have a full season of 22 episodes. NBC in the US has ordered a back nine for The Event so a full first season will be made.

  10. Bummer.

I’m actually quite enjoying The Event. I hope they don’t remove it from the schedule completely. It seems like it would be a fit for 7mate if they do remove it from their primary channel.

  11. Still have not made up my mind on this one. They need to realise the days of never ending series are over and these are not perpetual cash cows. They will have more success with strictly 1 series story arcs. The problem is that they have a single story idea and try to drag it from 1 series to 4 or 5 and the viewing public just wander off to something more shiny and sparkly and new.

    Own worst enemies…

  12. It’s a never ending cycle!, shows at 9:30 rate lower than at 8:30 and so on as the night goes, did they really thing it would get more ratings at 9:30?

Screw Seven I’m not waiting for the next move to 7TWO or 7MATE, I’d rather go else where and see it a week earlier.
