Eurovision 2011: Good evening Düsseldorf!

The German city of Düsseldorf has been chosen as Host City of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.

The German city of Düsseldorf has been chosen as Host City of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.

The final decision was announced overnight following a lengthy consideration of other German cities Berlin, Hamburg and Hannover.

Sietse Bakker, Manager Communications & PR said, “For the first time in many years, we find ourselves in the luxurious position of having a choice. In most countries, only the capital city has the venue, hotel capacity and technical infrastructure to host an event as large as the Eurovision Song Contest.

“In Germany, there are many cities who meet the requirements. By organising a fair bid process, Host Broadcaster NDR managed to find the most ideal circumstances to host the contest in Germany, which is in everyone’s best interest.”

Düsseldorf scored well with Fortuna Düsseldorf’s arena, and its surroundings. More than 24,000 viewers can attend each of the two Semi-Finals, the Grand Final, and also the Dress Rehearsals.

It also provides access from the neighboring countries, into the Netherlands and Belgium.

The Semi-Finals are scheduled to take place on 10 and 12 May, the Final on 14 May, 2011. Rehearsals are likely to kick off on Sunday 1 May.

Tickets are likely to go on sale late in the European fall.

SBS will of course screen the event in Australia next May.

  1. The shout out’s to Australia might have a bit to do with the Australians who go. There were about 20 of us over there last year, and we certainly made our presence felt.

  2. @SGT they give a shout out to Australia almost every year… I think they are just stunned that we even care about it.

btw some good early bird airfares to Europe in May are available right now 🙂

  3. So Dusseldorf will host the “Eurovision Song Contest” next year 🙂 I hope that there will be a little less “language imperialism” of English, and that participants will have pride in their own nation, and sing in their own tongues.

Can I ask anyone who supports the cultural identies of individual nations in the Eurovision Song Contest to vote here!

The petition is destined for the European Broadcating Union.

The rules should also be changed to enable the introduction of the international language Esperanto.

The use of Esperanto is forbidden at the moment.
