Networks cover Chilean rescue

Updated: Several Australian TV networks are covering the rescue of the Chilean miners as it unfolds -but ther are subtle differences in Live coverage.

Several Australian TV networks are covering the rescue of the Chilean miners today as it unfolds.

There are 33 men about to be brought to the surface after some two months trapped underground.

The first is expected to surface after midday AEDT.

Sunrise remained on air after 9am AEDT covering the event live until 11:30am when Seven News took over.

Nine was running a split screen during Kerri-Anne until Nine News began.

SKY News and ABC News have also been covering the event live.

But there are some subtle differences.

While Sunrise was live around the country since 9am, Kerri-Anne (and that split screen) was on delay outside Sydney and Melbourne. Update: QTQ advises it left Today at 8:15am to switch to Kerri-Anne in Brisbane with live coverage.

Seven abandoned The Morning Show today to continue Sunrise coverage of the rescue, including having Perth viewers pick up live coverage from 6am in the west (9am east coast coverage).

  1. And while Nine covered the last miner being rescued on the 11am News, WIN ran its Alive and Cooking and Susie Eleman Daily rubbish until 11.50 and crashed out after the last miner was on his way up . WIN are a joke! Even SBS, along with Prime and TEN and even ONE-HD and ABCNews24 were carrying it live in WIN territory. God forbid if WIN ever takes over control of Nine.

  2. oh, and just went back to check on SMH’s “Live” coverage…10 seconds out of sync !!! double fail…epic ! LOL ! and other Gen Y expressions…ho hum, todays mine rescue is tomorrow’s back page. Next !

  3. Local ABC radio this morning was reporting that the rescue of all the men will take up to 48 hours … wonder which network will be the first to drop their live coverage?

  4. I’ve been watching ABC News 24 via the iPhone app for the last hour or so. Great coverage. I imagine it is going to get very repetitious over the next 24 hours. But as others have mentioned, it is an event that needs to be covered.

I can’t imagine Seven or Nine covering this during prime time (even on the digital channels).

  5. @Nathan – i would have thought You would be more disappointed to miss those programs – or are you projecting your feelings onto others?

    Showbiz news huh? LOL

  6. “This is why we have networks like ABC News 24 and Sky News to provide constant coverage.” – But for those of us who don’t have access to HDTV or payTV…..
I guess missing Days of Our Lives and All Saints reruns for one day is too much to bear.

  7. It’s a bit ridiculous, Do you think Chilean TV or any other country would have continuous coverage if someone was stuck in our mines? Well we did have 2 people and I’m sure they didn’t even make a bleep on their (other countries) radar.

Why do we do this all the time?

  8. This is why we have networks like ABC News 24 and Sky News to provide constant coverage.

Whilst its an important event its not of national significance really and it isn’t 9/11 it doesn’t need constant rolling coverage news updates during commercial breaks and maybe a 15-30 minute update bulliten every few hours would be heaps.

I don’t think it requires ABC, SKY, Seven, Nine etc all to have a constant dedicated feed of the event; its not something that has affected Australians; its a sad story and good to see them being resuced but how much can you really cover?

  9. what is 7 going to go the 33 hours. they probably will. i am surprised they haven’t got kochie over there trying to get his head on international tv. like beaconsfield

  10. It’s a wonderful thing that the miners will hopefully get out but there seems to be a ghoulish bit overkill in action here by the networks with their kick it to me, kick it to me approach.

The world might be smaller but that doesn’t mean we need to see every slight movement of the cables and tube being slowly moved from one spot to another.
