Altiyan debuts @ #8

Altiyan Childs' "Somewhere in the World" debuts at #8 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

There was once a time when winning a show like Australian Idol would guarantee you a #1 single the next week.

X Factor‘s Altiyan Childs’ “Somewhere in the World” debuts at #8 on the ARIA Singles Chart, which is still pretty good for somebody who had no music career to speak of.

Australian singles chart
1(2) We R Who We R – Ke$ha (RCA/SME)
2(1) The Time (dirty Bit) – The Black Eyed Peas (INR/UMA)
3(4) Firework – Katy Perry (CAP/EMI)
4(3) Like A G6 – Far East Movement Feat. Cataracs & Dev (INR/UMA)
5(5) Raise Your Glass – P!nk (LAF/SME)
6(6) Only Girl (in The World) – Rihanna (DEF/UMA)
7(-) Yeah X3 – Chris Brown (SME)
8(-) Somewhere In The World – Altiyan Childs (SME)
9(7) Just A Dream – Nelly (UMA)
10(9) Heartbeat – Enrique Iglesias Feat. Nicole Scherzinger (UMA)

But does that really mean he has The X Factor?

I guess some shows are ambitiously titled. Who remembers Make Me a Supermodel?

i hate gettin on high horses and shi*t on the internet especially (coz it makes you sound like a d**k) but…… i spent the past year studying the Australian music industry (and global music industry i guess) at uni, and work for a record label in Melbourne.
going higher on the ARIA singles charts is dependent on singles sales yes, but its both digital and physical and by digital that includes iTunes. if the question you think the “chart people” should answer is if it will rise on the charts despite iTunes sales, im looking at the iTunes chart now and its at #25, and I see no record of a physical copy being released or if one will be.

Digital sales are the large larrge majority of single sales these days, so it seems iTunes kinda does matter in regards to hoping for a rise on the charts.
Vut there are other digital retailers e.g. Rip It, Bigpond, Sanity and sooo much more that the chart comes by so its not just iTunes to rag on.

  3. I always knew Altiyan would win, and yes he does have the X-factor. For all those who sit on the sidelines and criticise, show us what you can do, I’d like to see one of you sing Beautiful Day. I think he sang it better than Bono. Altiyan is a rare person and unfortunately people without souls would not relate to him. Most artists are a bit eccentric because they see the world with different eyes than most people. I love watching him on stage, this is where he belongs. At the end of the day, the competition was all his from day one. I would love to write a song for him and hear him wow the world. Well done Babe, If you can do it, anyone can.

  4. Altiyan’s song is boring to me, but I’m glad he’s getting some decent sales out of it – and a short selling week, as others have mentioned. I look forward to better songs and see how he goes. Guy’s selling week wasn’t short but radio pretty much ignored Who’s That Girl for a while. For the first week of its release I didn’t hear it and radio play didn’t really pick up in my neck of the woods until after his X-Factor appearance. I noticed today that it was #1 on Itunes so maybe he’ll move up in the charts a bit more.

  5. Channel 7 could have stopped all of this by pre-ordering Altiyans single and pushing it to the number 1 spot – interesting they didn’t think it worthy to spend the money on their own talent winner.

How many millions have been spent and it didn’t go straight to no. 1? Flop and failure.

@ Mandy – it has been like a week, I’d say us ‘haters’ are referring to the longevity of Altiyan i.e. will he be around this time next year or in 5 years or 20 years. LMAO at that thought.

Well to be honest, I think he’ll either stay put at number 8 or drop down the charts. I don’t believe he will rise because his physical single hasn’t been released yet (even though they don’t count as much)and radio don’t seem to be playing him.

And also, like you said about him because number 1 on itunes for 3 days, those sales made up the week where he debuted at number 8 but the next few days it dropped to 4 then 7, 8 and 10 respectively. As a result, the sales for this week will be based on those numbers and so that’s why I think he’ll stay put or drop. And just because he was number 1 on itunes, doesn’t mean he sold a million copies. Some other songs could be just be old but are still banging the charts.

  7. Altiyan was #1 through to Monday morning, so it will have three days of #1 sales contributing to its position this week. The drop to #10 has been swift and if he continues to drop over the next three days until the charts are compiled, then he’ll probably drop on this week’s charts. If he remains around #10, though, the strong sales from three days at #1 combined with Top 10 sales for the rest of the week will probably be enough to see him move up a bit. With three days at #1 this week, though, the single’s not going to disappear without a trace, as some are predicting (and hoping). @Dan – your arrogance is so endearing! 🙂

  8. Ok, so all the people that “know the charts” and think that iTunes matters! what does it mean if you are number 1 on the ITunes charts for 3 days and are now sitting at 10!! I wonder if that means his single will climb on the ARIA charts next week?? hmmm, it’s a tough one isn’t it. I’m sure only people that really understand the charts will know how to answer this though 😛

  9. @ John Jackson. Actually, singles sales are bigger than ever, just look at the charts and all the Platinum and Multi Platinum accreditations. And unlike albums, singles sales are actually based on sales as like you said, physical CD singles are pretty much non-existant anymore, unlike album sales which they base on shipments to stores, not actual sales.

There’s no denying, this singles’ chart success is a disappointment. It’s already falling quickly on iTunes after less than a week being on sale. Altiyan was just a huge hype machine Channel 7 tried to get over the line, and it seems to be failing.

  10. My local radio station was bagging Altiyan this morning for “failing to reach #1”. They did exactly the same thing when Natalie Gauci debuted at #2 back in 2006. There are so many misinformed posts in this thread it’s not even funny!
    a) The Australian chart week runs from Friday midnight (am) to Thursday midnight (pm).
    b) Altiyan’s single was available digitally from late Monday night (Tuesday on iTunes, the biggest retailer of singles in Australia), so its #8 debut is based on three days’ sales. Guy’s new single aside, everything else on the charts had been available for seven days when the charts were compiled. Flop? Hardly.
    c) Singles sales in Australia have reached levels never before seen in this country. Even a single that barely scrapes the Top 20 can sell enough to go Gold now (35 000 copies). Over the past six months, the average #1 single sells around 20 000 copies a week. Three years ago, if the #1 single sold 10k in a week, it was a phenomenon. Now it’s a rare week when the entire Top 5 doesn’t sell over 10k. In a nutshell, digital singles have managed to revive the singles market, which was basically dead a few years ago.

Sorry for the long post, David, but it was clear that almost no one really had a clue about the ARIA charts or how they work. As a paid subscriber for 20 years, I know what they’re all about and how relevant they still are.

  11. what happend to the australian pop music industry is just gone totally s**t
i remember back in 2002, 2003 it was booming with stars like Shakaya, Holly Valance, Kylie, Delta, Bardot??

  12. actually, it was 7 days of sales, not 3.

i lover how people who hated x factor are dissing (yeah thats me) and x factor lovers are gettin all defensive xD makes me laugh

by the way, if people wanna compare with Idol, the worst Debut by an Idol winner was #3 (wes carr) all debut singles except 2 had Peaked at #1

a debut of #8 is a slight whoopsie, but a top 10 single after 7 days of sales is still a good effort for an new aussie artist.

  13. @Dave. Exactly. People are so quick to criticize. If he had a whole weeks worth of sales he would have been in the top five for sure. Both Altiyan’s and Guy’s single have done extremely well on ITunes(where most people now buy singles) so I’m judging Altiyan on his performance on ITunes . And for the people who actually follow music charts alot of singles debut lower than what they actually peak at these days. Theres no point in comparing chart performance to those of 2003 etc

  14. Negative nellies aside, who will diss Altiyan if he takes a bad photo, i guess with a 1.8 million viewers watching him win, you might expect even a fraction of those to buy the single and therefore make it No.1, but as others have said, the landscape and measuring tools have changed for music sales. It took the industry and its cynics half a dozen albums in 7 years to finally recognise Guy Sebastian as a legitimate and talented recording artist. Methinks it will take Altiytan some time before he is established. Give him a go, geeees!
