There was once a time when winning a show like Australian Idol would guarantee you a #1 single the next week.
X Factor‘s Altiyan Childs’ “Somewhere in the World” debuts at #8 on the ARIA Singles Chart, which is still pretty good for somebody who had no music career to speak of.
Australian singles chart
1(2) We R Who We R – Ke$ha (RCA/SME)
2(1) The Time (dirty Bit) – The Black Eyed Peas (INR/UMA)
3(4) Firework – Katy Perry (CAP/EMI)
4(3) Like A G6 – Far East Movement Feat. Cataracs & Dev (INR/UMA)
5(5) Raise Your Glass – P!nk (LAF/SME)
6(6) Only Girl (in The World) – Rihanna (DEF/UMA)

8(-) Somewhere In The World – Altiyan Childs (SME)
9(7) Just A Dream – Nelly (UMA)
10(9) Heartbeat – Enrique Iglesias Feat. Nicole Scherzinger (UMA)
But does that really mean he has The X Factor?
I guess some shows are ambitiously titled. Who remembers Make Me a Supermodel?

For those criticizing the x factor or idol or even Altiyan Childs, take a look at Guy Sebastion and Ricki Lee Culter. they made it and yes those shows gave them a start or in Altiyan’s case a re-start. There are 2 things which separate the successors from the failures who come out of x factor and Idol and that is quallity of songs and hard work. The contestants which will succeed in this industry have to work hard and have a good team behind them i said this before, when Altiyan went AWOL in a cave a month ago. Again song quality and hard work plus some luck, and he will make it.
well thats disappointing, but true, he only had a couple of days of sales and he hasnt got any airplay yet so… But look at random from the first xfactor, they didnt get a number 1 single too, so not all surprising.
Anyways, aria charts arent all big, i think its just a runner up place where its easy to make the top 10 and top the charts. The real deal happens in the US billboards and UK. I mean, most artists can make the top 10 ariacharts in an sec. Just come here for promo, get some airplay and you’re done, where as the US and UK are much harder.
But good luck to him anyways.
Having a look at the songs on that top 10 list – its pretty easy to understand why Altyian has debuted so high – its pretty slim pickings in the rest of the list. What happened to the music industry in this country?
Different times. The days are pretty much over for high selling singles as they are no longer what they once were as singles are no longer really distributed to stores. It is only albums.. so no more instore signings for singles, etc. Singles are pretty much download only these days.
Also, I think it wasn’t on sale for the whole chart week. Perhaps a better placing will be in the next chart.
Agree with Henry. #8 for 3 days’ sales isn’t that bad.
Haven’t heard the song because i don’t watch that crap and don’t listen to radio, but for a “talent” contest winner to debut at #8 is very poor. The song will probably slide down the charts very quickly, album will probably do the same and his career will now be over. Talent contests have had their day in this country.
I don’t understand iTunes at all… So they lose sales to people like me who’d rather buy a single from a CD store. Now that singles are no longer sold there’s no other option
Please note this is entirely hypothetical and I’d never have any intention of getting this particular single… Just sayin’.
While I enjoy watching these kind of shows (Idol, X Factor) I hardly ever bother buying the winner’s records. Why? Because they’re usually a bunch of novelty pop slop and out of touch with the style the performers gave on the show.
That said I’ll probably give Altiyan’s album a listen out of curiosity…then leave it sitting on iTunes unplayed for four years
how can you say he had no music career to speak of when he was previously in a band ?
That’s a musical background. The band had folded and he had given up performing until XF.
no 8 isnt bad he was no 1 most of last week on itunes until guy sebastian stole the top spot on the weekend
that’s pretty bad, although it wasn’t helped by the fact it only had a few days worth of sales in its first week. i think even more disapointed would be guy sebastian at #11. that song was tipped as making it to #1, and both songs looked likely to looking at the itunes charts.
although Ronan seems to be the member of the X factor family doing the best. his album is at #3.
charts schmarts… they’re a measuring stick of the past. Today’s success, failure or indifference is decided on the live circuit
Who??????????????
We’ll to give Altiyan some credit, he is in the rock genre and over the age of 25. Just look at all of the other R&B and dance fodder he is up against in the Top 10. Not exactly the market for the tween and teen market who buy up this kind of dross.
#8 is not that bad considering it was only on sale for 3 out of the possible 7 days that the chart is worked out on (which is Fri-Thurs).
I have not checked for a couple of days, but Altiyan was #1 on Itunes for most of last week.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but i’d assume that’s where most people get their music from these days? That or illegal downloads.
Music charts? Are they still relevant…?
Goodbye career even before it started… how surprising… not.
A duet with some US flavour of the moment will be his only hope, it’s worked for Guy Sebastian several times.
It did better than I thought it would do but I suspect that next week it will live up to my expectations and disappear pretty quickly.
Altiyan won the X-factor, doesn’t mean that he has any X-factor.
The chart landscape has changed greatly since Idols peak days. The song was number one for four days on ITunes. There are so many negative nancy’s on here.
I think it was a pretty poor choice as the debut single to release for him. It’ll be interesting to see what happens from here.
who??
The answer is no, it’s just means what Kyle Sandilands thought of the winning song is accurate. It’s a dud!.
As an avid chart-watcher, let me tell you, this is nothing short of a disaster. It was the one place the X factor might be able to make up lost money. These things always have a slippery slide down the charts too. I don’t think we will see an album, and I Don’t think the show will return.
C’mon. Even Wes Carr got a number one single
it’s a pretty awful debut single…
