Daryl: “No news yet on next year”

As the clock ticks down to the last-ever Hey Hey at Nine's Bendigo Street studios, Daryl Somers says there is no word yet on 2011.

As the clock ticks down to the last-ever Hey Hey it’s Saturday at Nine’s Bendigo Street studios this weekend, Daryl Somers says there is no word yet on a return for the show in 2011.

Earlier today Somers tweeted the following:

“Building up for a huge final Hey Hey this Saturday out of the GTV9 studios Richmond.”

“Mixed emotions at this point, no time to be sad at this stage it’s all go go go – and I don’t mean the digital channel.”

But was this hinting at darker news for the show?

Three hours later, he clarified: “Ok we have no news yet on next year. It is just the last Hey Hey in Studio 9 in Richmond.”

Indeed it will end an impressive run of live shows by Somers and co. which began in 1971, before ending in 1999. Kudos also to many crew who have been with show for a generation.

If the show returns next year, and that is no guarantee, it would be produced at Dockland Studios, presumably having to tighten the reins on expenditure. Figures outside Melbourne have been sliding.

Nine’s 2011 Programme Launch to media buyers takes place in a week. If Hey Hey is not announced to return, any potential absence could upstage the new shows that will be showcased for 2011.

If the news for Hey Hey is bad, Nine may seek to clarify its position in a window period after the final episode and its 2011 launch.

Whichever way the penny falls in this cut-throat biz, it’s bound to be a sentimental episode this Saturday, ahead of the GTV9 party Lights, Camera, Party: Television City Celebrates!

  1. Please come back on and keep hey hey it Saturday and it should be on a Saturday night. Because if you do Wednesday people won’t have time to watch the show because they be tired from work on Saturday you will be able to watch the show and for the kids to stay up a little bit late with the mum & dad for them to have fish & chips & pizza on Saturday night. If you do pluck a duck they should difent ford cars on Saturday to give away. Come back hey hey it Saturday On a saturday

  2. As a huge fan of Hey Hey,i would love to see it return, but i have huge doubts. With the show being interupted by rugby etc in the other states throughout the year,it hasn’t been really able to settle down.Apart from in Melbourne where the rugby etc was shown later. The numbers to me are not strong enough which is a real shame.I hope it does return then i might get opportunity to finally be in the audience.I was promised tickets to this series and heard nothing back from them,so i am extremely disappointed and to never get the opportunity to ever be in the audience of any Hey Hey show past or present it really hurts

  3. I’m waiting with thousands of other HHIS haters under our own specially erected marquee just outside the TVTonight foyer, champagne bottles eagerly awaiting being popped when no announcement of renewal comes…

  4. Mixed thoughts on it, since the show’s original demise i have long lamented that there was nothing on to replace it on a saturday night (aside from the occasional blockbuster AFL match).

I have tuned in to the episodes since the return (although a small part is “record and watch later via the pvr” and part “have it on, but not give it 100% attention while doing other things). Lots of the show is “daggy”, especially in today’s tv standard, my main gripe is occasionally the pace of the show can be a little awkward. Some segments may go for too long, others perhaps not long enough. The show excels with Daryl and the team’s chemistry, but i also feel it can drag (Daryl being one culprit, can often waffle on….. much like my current comment lol).

They should try to reinvent the wheel, keep Red Faces and Plucka…. but invent new crazy segments that are interesting due to their unpredictable nature.

  5. Darryl Sommers is a legend. So many years on the screen and he has never been involved in any scandal. He is a positive role model with a great demeanour. The TV industry of the future needs people like him to be involved in one way or another. You can not deny the show has been a community hub of television. With the TV audience so fragmented these days it was never going to get the ratings of the past but I think Channel 9 would be quite pleased. Hts off to you Darryl.

  6. I say Axe this dog of a show with the largest ax possible! Not only is this show dated but the host Daryl Sommers is the most annoying host on the planet. He rarely lets his guests speak and when he does he continually interrupts them. He seems to think the show is all about him; perhaps it is Mr Sommers….that’s why the show is receiving such embarrassing ratings!!!

  7. Hey Hey is not just a show it is an institution. It should be heritage listed. This is one of very few Australian programs that is purely Australian. It has evolved over 40 years into unique program that should be left on TV forever. Maybe Grant Denyer could take over when Daryl retires.
