Dicko opens a Can of Worms on TEN

Dicko will host a panel show for TEN that provides a "telling insight into what Australia really thinks once the barriers of political correctness are removed."

Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson will return to Network TEN for a new weekly panel show to be produced by Zapruder’s Other Films and his management company Watercooler Media.

Can of Worms is described as “an irreverent, frank and topical new panel show” that provides a “telling insight into what Australia really thinks once the barriers of political correctness are removed.”

Andrew Denton, Zapruder’s Other Films said, “When Dicko came to us earlier in the year with the gem of an idea about a good, old-fashioned, shiny-floor, sh*t-stirring piece of television, we knew he was onto something. He is very passionate about Can Of Worms and we are excited to be working with him on it. However, if you’re offended by honesty this may not be the show for you”.

David Mott, chief programming officer said he was thrilled to be working with producers Andrew Denton and Anita Jacoby.

Can of Worms is the perfect vehicle to see the return of Dicko to our screens. We have had a long and successful relationship and are genuinely pleased to be working together again on such a fantastic project.

“When Andrew, Anita and the guys from Watercooler Media came in to pitch the program to us, it was an immediate yes. It is fresh, bold and certainly addresses the elephant in the room. We love it!”

Dicko became an instant hit when he arrived with Australian Idol in 2002, before less successful venture with Seven hosting My Restaurant Rules and Celebrity Survivor, before eventually returning to the Idol franchise.

The project has been in development with Zapruder’s for several months.

  1. @dave, Zapruders Other Films does make duds – does David Tench Tonight ring any bells? If my memory serves me correctly, that also screened on Ten. Not sure about this one, as I dislike Dicko intensely and does Channel Ten really need another panel show?

  2. A good panel/debate show is something that is desperately needed again (sans B&TB).Jan,Pru & Jeannie should all be a part of this format.Hope it works.
Channel Ten lineup for 2011 should be-
    12pm The Circle
    2pm Panel show
    3pm Ready Steady Cook

Would it be possible to have an all aussie arvo line up?

  3. @Trix – I agree, there’s potential to honestly and openly explore some ideas and viewpoints. Equally the show could become a vehicle for ignorance and intolerance fueled by people with an axe to grind. Based on past ‘button pushing’ attempts, sadly, it could be the latter.

  4. @Grinspoon – i agree with your differentiation of style of program – Insight fits into the first category and it works – 10 is likely to go more emotive in choices and style. @Jason D – Hungry Beast was by no means a dud- either critically or viewer wise. @Andrew – not sure that Dicko is a success magnet – he is not a natural presenter or screen host, but with good direction he may adapt – his track record is hardly exemplary. Denton and co are never to be underestimated – and I
am no fan of his – but recognise the cache around him and all he pursues.

  5. I think this will work but not sure where they can schedule it will be something different to other news chat panel shows, especially with 7PM Project, The Drum and even Insiders filling various niches.

I’m a bit disappointed that it sounds like it’s just The Panel v.2011, but I’m sure there will be variety programming on Ten/11 with Micallef and Hamish & Andy next year.

  6. The thing is, I think there’s room for open and public discussion of issues and topics where people aren’t self censoring to be political correct. How ever the dangers a show like this needs to avoid are people who are deliberately being non politically correct for the sake of it, and people who are politically incorrect from a point of ignorance.

A mature conversation of informed intelligent people discussing topics in a non self censorship fashion. Not just people with an opinion, where they can’t rationally debate it. There’s a wide range of issue facing modern Australia that this show could cover. However say someone of the opinion that burqa’s should be banned. For a show like this they better actually have a thought out reasoning and exploration of the issue.

As they say, opinions are like A*seholes, everyones got one. The show needs intelligent, or at least thought out opinions. Then whether right or wrong people can have a mature discussion of the issues. However I have never ever seen anything like this where people are intelligent and mature on Australian TV and so I doubt this’ll be any different. You have to remove the people who are purely emotionally or ideologically opinionated, those who just have opinions on everything whether rational, thought out or not.
They won’t because the show will be for entertainment and shock. Hence why it’s on network 10.

  7. If it’d be like an adult version of PG rated 7PM Project (which that show could and should do a late night weekly 1 hour MA rated version of, for the Eleven channel only), do people even need it.

  8. It’s an interesting concept for television, however, it’s nothing new, it basically sounds like what you’d see reading news.com.au article comment blogs over the years. As for Zapruder not making duds, Hungry Beast was hardly a success. But this sounds interesting and provocative, I look forward to it.

  9. Curiously enough, I quite like Dicko – despite his association with some our more contemptible TV shows – so I’ll be having a look.
    Thanks for the heads-up.

  10. Hmm, all depends on whether they head down the Pauline Hanson style of “honesty” or perhaps more the Peter Singer path – intellect coupled with some potentially out there and controversial ideas. Will be interesting to see what they do with it.

  11. This sounds good…. Will kinda be like the start of gruen when they tackle taboo subjects with honest opinions …. Hope they get social commentary experts rather than celebs

  12. Another panel show for Ten? Mmm, not sure about this one. Title will lend itself to some untoward references. Zapruder doesn’t make duds, though – so curious!

  13. This looks good something new and honest. i will enjoy this, very much enjoy dicko and other Zapruder’s Other Films projects such as the Gruen Transfer. However i can just hear those annoying and winging and whining uptight parts of the Australian community bitching about this and when that happens i hope ten don’t cave in i hope they stick to their guns especially if this show is a success. This might have to be on a M rating and on a 9.30 time slot.
