  1. good luck in your retirement ray. you’ve done us proud during the past decades with your accuracy and smooth voice. best wishes for your future.

  2. Knowfirst, I watch NBN everynight. 17 years as a journo and you know all the in’s and out’s of TV news, sales and adverstising do you? What type of jouranlism were you in? Surely not TV?
I’m glad you are not in charge of any television station. I would shudder to think what your ratings and viewer numbers would be.
I have over 15 years television news experience both in Oz and overseas.
Once again I suggest you watch the 2 best news services in the region Ten and Prime with 3 day old news with no pictures. And switch off from the only local content you will get in the region.

  3. Ray Dinneen is a stalwart of news in Newcastle, and has been a local “star” for decades.

And for those saying they’ve never heard of NBN, I can assure you that you’ve heard of many of the talent that it has produced over the years.

Chris Bath used to read the news with Ray before she went to Seven. NSW tourism minister Jodi McKay is another former NBN newsreader. Paul Gregg from Sky News used to be a sports reporter for NBN.

And Big Dog would always beat Humphrey in a street fight. 😉

  4. @Knowfirst I’m not a journalist but I have to agree with tmac on this i find that NBN is a much better alternative to the full on “local” news that’s unbearable to watch on prime. It mixes it up by showing national news with a local feel. And I’m also pretty sure that its killing prime in the ratings except for in Taree and Kempsey…

Will miss ray though! He’s like our equivalent of Mal Walden.

  5. tmac – ever watched NBN News? Most of the “local” news is at least a day old, squashed between bits of crap from GTV9 with no relevance to this region whatsoever.

And yes, being a journalist for the past 17 years, I do think I am qualified to comment.

    You?

  6. knowfirst, I love the fact you think you know how a tv staions runs and how the news should work best.. Are you an expert in the field?
If you think NBN is outdated watch another channel, perhaps prime or ten. They have great local content if you like updates with 2 day old news.
    Congrats to Ray awesome effort

  7. He’s been there since colour television started! The ratings are pretty massive for NBN News (& NBN in general), so time will tell whether this will affect anything.

    It’s lucky he wasn’t born a female. 😉

  8. Pretty certain Ray’s been sipping from the fountain of youth. He really doesn’t look much different today than when I first started watching his bulletins back in 1983!

  9. I identify with your comments, Andy. I used to spend school holidays in Port Stevens and used to watch a very young Ray Dineen in the late 70’s through the eighties. The newsreaders of your youth leave a strong impression and association. Eric Walters, Katrina Lee, James Dibble, Ross Symonds, Richard Morecroft (who i had the enormous pleasure to work with – consummate gent!).

  10. Ray deserves a special slot on the 9 revived “This Is Your Life”… perhaps even a Knighthood.
He should stand for Parliament and become the Minister for Communication.
    Well done, Ray.
    Your country salutes you…

  11. Unfortunately NBN’s news is outdated, and if management had thought about it, this would have been the perfect time to review the structure.

WIN has it right – Nine News at 6, local news at 6.30.

But I doubt NBN has the intestinal fortitude to do it.

  12. Oh wow! Ray is the face of news in Newcastle and I grew up watching him every night from 6-7pm. The plus of having an hour long news bulletin in Newcastle was not seeing Two And A Half Men at 7pm!

Although I no longer live in Newcastle I still would tune in every time I would go back to visit my family. Good luck Ray!
