Hey Hey -the elephant in the room

With Hey Hey not included in today's 2011 Programming Launch, where does this leave the show? The answer is here.

At today’s 2011 Programming launch Nine announced most of its big new shows for next year -but neglected to renew Hey Hey it’s Saturday.

Fans have been hoping for some clarity ever since host Daryl Somers told them on air to “ask a journalist” about it’s future.

So TV Tonight put the question to a Nine spokesperson who has clarified the state of play: there is still no decision.

Somers and Nine Programmer Michael Healy are due to have discussions next week regarding its future.

Outside of Melbourne the show has problems, but there is still affection for the show within Nine.

One source said the fact the show was not announced today isn’t encouraging, but there is still a 50 / 50 shot of renewal.

Nine could only announce what it had locked in today and Hey Hey is currently TBA.

  1. I still haven’t watch any of the show since it’s return, even on Saturday nights. But if it does return I agree with those who say it should be a number of specials and not a 10 or 20 series run!

  2. Good on them for doing a revival but Ch 9 can’t seriously be wanting to renew this. There’s a reason the show died originally, it’s now died again…please don’t resusitate a corpse Nine!

  3. I don’t think it can go away for ever. I think it should come back. If it can’t do shows regularly then at least say once or twice a month. Daryl is ok, but he also doesn’t have to be there all the time, there were guest hosts previously. They could try that again. Favourite guest hosts from what I remember previously were Lano & Woodley.

  4. Ok this may seem narrow minded but when did everything become about the bloody ratings? Hey Hey was never about the ratings and still isn’t. Surely they can have one show a week which doesn’t matter. And to all the haters, hey hey was one of the best things for the australian music, film and entertainment industry. not only did/does it promote local and international talent, it alerts the nation of who is out there and what is happening. for the ten years it was absent the industry has died substantially. This show does what all the late night talk shows do in America and the UK.

  5. Jimbo, no you’re not the only one. I can’t understand why some people have a problem with him? He’s a very nice gentlemen who has a warm personality and I believe he has a good sense of humour.

I just think alot of viewers have no idea what humour is anymore. I think Two and a Half Idiots is just the usual smutt and that seems to be all what people enjoy these days?? Where are the true original clean fun comedies like back in the 60’s with Bewitched etc? Isn’t there anything anyone can come up with that doesn’t involve smut ?

  6. am i the only person who doesn’t mid Daryl? Surely there must be at least one more ‘fan’ out there? As much as i like the show, i can’t see Hey Hey running for the whole 40 weeks of ratings season next year.

There are 3 options i have for the show in 2011’s ratings season (40 weeks) are:
1: have 10 episodes only – either the first or last Sat of each month
2: have only 3 episdes – one for each season (Autumn / Winter / Spring)
3: or how it was like this year. 20 eps split into 2 seasons

  7. I think the real elephant in the room is Daryl. Some elements of the show are timeless, Blackman, Red, Dickie and they should be kept, some of the segments, Red Faces, What Cheeses Me Off etc should be kept because they’re also still funny and have relevence.

But I think Daryl needs to step back into a backstage role, I’m sure he still has plenty to contribute, but it’s not the 70’s or 80’s anymore. Back then he was probably trendy like the show was back then (I don’t know I was only born in 85.) But it needs fresh blood someone to reinvigorate it and give it that spark that made it must see television in the 80’s and 90’s.

While we’re on the subject of moving people on, Russell Gilbert for no other reason than he sucks air out of the building every time he’s on the screen, please Daryl’s Awe Dad jokes are bad enough…

As I said there’s a lot of things worth saving in Hey Hey, but some of it is way past its used by date and really needs to be thrown out, before it starts to smell.

  8. Problem for Hey Hey and shows of it’s ilk (Rove etc), is that now is the time that Musical acts start to tour and the Festivals begin (Big Day Out etc), to get people watching they need headline acts (imagine if U2 were on for example).

Of course, due to the way Ratings work and revolve around advertising to have these guests on now would get great a summer ratings, however not the advertising dollars that would keep shows like Hey Hey going.

Unless shows like Hey Hey could get “sponsors” like the Cricket has with Vodaphone and KFC, then it could not be sustained over summer

  9. This is why I hardly ever watch ch.9……the left hand does not seem to know what the right is doing…..appears to this viewer….to be rather disorganised.

  10. If they are going to ditch the weekly routine, make it monthly. Good guests can be arranged, mega show each month, 12 shows a year, run for 2.5 hours.

    That sounds about right.

Thanks for your efforts in trying to clear things up for us David.

  11. Nine should acquire the rights to Saturday NRL, show one game live in NSW/Qld and Hey hey live in AFL states. Play the opposite event on delay. Problem solved (worked for the four nations and state of origin this year)

  12. If it comes back next year it should come back as ‘event television’ and as such only do 2 or 3 shows for the year. Keeping the crew and talent onboard for so few shows will be the issue.
