Nine promising “big surprise”

What big announcement, to be made shortly, is Nine hinting at?

Maybe I am overreacting, but I thought this is something you guys could have a little fun with…

At the end of Nine’s 2011 launch tomorrow in Sydney, there could be something extra-special being unveiled.

Nine Managing Director Jeffrey Browne has personally told me in the last week -not once but twice- that there will be a “big surprise” announced at the end of the launch.

The impression I get is that it’s not just a new show to be revealed.

Hmmmmmm…..I don’t really see how it can be a new channel. So is the primary channel switching to HD? Is TCN going to move house? Is Charlie Sheen going to make a personal appearance and apologise for his indiscretions and relentless repeats (which quite frankly are also indiscretions)?

You guys are always great with theories, so over to you….

Update: The surprise is PBL Media group rebrands as Nine Entertainment Co.

  1. They’re going to start showing programs on time and not 10 minutes late every night?

I very much doubt the main channel will go HD, unless they want their core audiance to vanish over night and another channel is out of the question IMO.

Maybe it’s theme nights or a high profile celebrity signing?

  2. Moving the News to 7pm followed by ACA at 7:30 in all markets to enable a greater share of audience numbers and inturn advertising dollars.

Two and Half Men along with another sitcom (im hearing Friends or Frazer) at 6pm/6:30pm

  3. I wish that would be for the Today Show to get a new set and maybe getting back Kellie Connoly.

Hopefully it’s not a surprise as in they poached talents or key employees from rival networks.

  4. I reckon GO! HD or GEM becoming a Sci-Fi/ Fantasy channel now that would be awesome but it’s more likely nine or GO! HD. GO! will also be dropping exclamation mark.

  5. Well 7 announced an hour ago on their Facebook page that from January 1st next year 7MATE will be SD and 7 will be HD. This sucks for me as I live in Griffith NSW and we only have SD WIN, PRIME and TEN with none of their sister channels – meaning if that occurs we will loose the main channels and be left with the sister channels till the HD channels launch which could be anywhere from mid to late next year ='(

  6. How could the primary channel switch to HD? There’s not enough bandwidth as it is.

But the cricket in HD from WIN would be a big enough surprise for me.

  7. I’m not sure if this got addressed during the anti-syphoning review or not, but don’t they still have to show the primary on SD until analogue switch-off? They could show the primary on both HD and SD, like One has been doing to date, but I don’t think they’re allowed to go HD-only with the primary yet, correct? HD is wasted on Gem – I saw a Gem ad last week advertising “HD movies”… in the middle of a movie they were showing in 4:3! Bizarrely, the watermark was out in the 16:9 corner, not in the usual 4:3 safe “corner”, so they’re showing the movie in 4:3, with the watermark out in the 16:9 corner!
