Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton: “I thought I was going to die.”

Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton has told ABC1's Compass she was "literally being choked to death" on the day before a court appearance in Darwin.

Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton has told ABC1’s Compass she was “literally being choked to death” on the day before a court appearance in Darwin.

Chamberlain-Creighton speaks to interviewer Scott Stephens as part of his “Life’s Big Questions” series with celebrities.

The series tackles questions of faith, forgiveness, prayer, guilt, belief systems and more.

Chamberlain-Creighton was convicted of murdering her nine week old baby daughter Azaria in 1980 despite her claims a dingo had taken her baby. It was a case that created world headines, captivating -and dividing- the nation for years. After three years in prison and a lengthy campaign to prove her innocence she was finally exonerated. In the Compass interview she speaks about how her Seventh Day Adventist faith got her through such monumental ordeals.

In this clip she answers the question, “Have you encountered evil?”

It’s compelling stuff if the case still holds your attention.

The episode airs 10pm Sunday March 6th on ABC1.

This Sunday’s guest is The Chaser‘s Julian Morrow while Clare Bowditch, Philip Nitschke and Rolf de Heer will follow later.

  1. I was greatly heartened to see and hear Lindy giving voice to God’s faithfulness throughout the terrible hardship she had to endure. From the start I strongly believed in her innocence and saw the campaign against her as directly from the forces of evil. To some extent I can relate to her testimony of her experience in Darwin, the night before her trial. At a time of trauma in my life I awoke one night to a fearful sense of overpowering evil in the room, which went only when I managed to speak out the Name of Jesus. I am so glad that the ABC gave us the opportunity to hear Lindy

  2. I have not thought of Lindy for years and there she was when I turned the telly on the other night. Lindy is a true hero in my eyes and especially because she would be the last to label herself as such. She never dreamt she would be in this horrific situation yet she endured the most terrifying fears and evil with her mind and heart in tact. Her courage and generosity in sharing how she survived are an inspiration to me. I am grateful for her insights. They come at a most challenging time in my life where the future safety of a precious baby is threatened.Undoubtedly no coincidence.!Thank you.

  3. I’m not sure you can be “literally” choked by a spectral presence but then again the only time i’ve muttered “jesus” over and over again in the bedroom it was under very different circumstances…

  4. The whole story was an awful blight on Australia, we as a nation should hang our heads in shame for the vilification this woman and her family had to endure. I remember the arguments only to well, it was disgusting.
Sadly to this day Lindy is still vilified and is now seen as a gold digger. I am glad she is tough enough to keep answering the questions but sadly she is still seen with some suspicion in the community.
I note that the series is interviewing celebrities but I must add that Lindy is an unintentional celebrity, she never asked for any of this to happen to her, her family or her baby Azaria.

  5. I have always believed that Lindy is innocent and I cannot imagine what it must have been like to not only lose your baby girl in such circumstances, but to then be prosecuted and imprisoned for a crime you did not commit. Such a tragic situation. I’m not sure if the Chamberlains were ever financially compensated for their ordeal, but I think they should have been.
