Screenwriting guru Robert McKee to visit Oz

Renowned Hollywood writer Robert McKee will make a return visit to Australia for a series of seminars in Sydney and Melbourne.

Renowned Hollywood writer Robert McKee will make a return visit to Australia for a series of seminars in Sydney and Melbourne.

Whenever McKee speaks on Story there are invariably big names there to listen.

Several of his graduates will compete at the Academy Awards on Monday including writers for The Fighter, Black Swan, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, The Kids Are Alright and How To Train Your Dragon.

His graduates have received 32 Academy Awards, 158 Emmys, 21 WGA awards and 17 DGA awards.

Australian students have included Claudia Karvan (Spirited, Love My Way), Rob Sitch (The Castle), Andrew Stanton (Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Wall*E), Leigh Whannell (Saw 1, 2 & 3) and Adam Elliot (Harvey Krumpet, Mary and Max).

McKee will present a four day Story Seminar in Sydney and three Genre sessions in Melbourne.

  1. Joe Eszterhas is a hack! Have your seen the film, Betrayed? It’s example of one of the worst screenplays ever written. Full of plot-holes, stupid characters with no drive or believable motivations and an ending that makes people want to puke!

  2. Haha, I wondered where I recognised the name Robert McKee before… it was from Joe Eszterhas’ ripping McKee apart in his book The Devil’s Guide to Hollywood: The Screenwriter as God.

    Apparently McKee does the talk circuit but does not have any actual film writing success under his belt — which Mr. Eszterhas isn’t shy about pointing out (on more than one occasion).

  3. I did his story siminar a while back and I am so excited that he’s coming again. Hopefully it’s a sellout. This country certainly has a lot to learn about the craft of storytelling.
