Super Bowl: Black Eyed Peas yes, Christina no.

Black Eyed Peas wowed the Half Time show but Christine Aguilera's lyric change of the National Anthem is Super Bowl's talking point.

The Black Eyes Peas have left the building, or rather the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, after wowing the audience with the Super Bowl’s Half Time entertainment.

Lowered from above onto centrestage, the four leather-clad singers resembled something from outer space, accompanied by hundreds of neon-lit dancers. They performed a medley of songs including : “I Gotta Feeling,” “Boom Boom Pow,” “Pump It,” “The Time (Dirty Bit),” “Let’s Get It Started,” and “Where Is the Love?”

Joining then were guitarist Slash performing “Sweet Child o’ Mine” with Fergie, while Usher sang “OMG” with will.i.am.

Super Bowl also saw Glee‘s Lea Michele sing “America the Beautiful.”

But it was Christina Aguilera who left everyone on social media talking after substituting lyrics in the national anthem.

Aguilera replaced the fourth line, “o’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming,” with a version of the second line, “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.”

With the eyes of the nation watching, the blunder will doubtless join Super Bowl‘s hall of infamy, led by Janet Jackson’s ‘wardrobe malfunction’ of 2004.

Australia’s Keith Urban performed at the Pre-Show along with Maroon 5.

The game between Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers is airing in Australia on TEN / ONE and ESPN.

  1. Christina Aguilera’s version of Tthe SSB was completely inexcusable and she won’t be able to PR spin her way out of this. She should issue an unreserved apology for that travesty. I watched it on YouTube and had to pick my jaw up off the floor at the concusion, I was so horrifed by the caterwauling. Of all the iconic songs at an iconic event to stuff up, this was the one. I am so Over these precioust divas who try and turn the national anthem into a torch song. Please, just sing the song as it was originally written and arranged. Nobody wants to hear muti-octave vocal gymnastics and R&B style melismatic vocal delivery. It is not just American vocalists who are guilty of this. I have heard Advance Australia Fair slaughtered by many of our vocalists as well.

  2. my god! Do any of you people ever go see live shows? Live versus recorded in a studio with no dancing are poles apart. BEP were great and visually stunning. Christina, despite the stuff up, belted out the anthem and the girl from Glee was her stunning best. Yes it’s all very self indulgent as America celebrates themselves for being American, but it was still a great spectacle.

  3. Imagine if this happened during the AFL Grand Final. Lionel Richie for Super Bowl XLVI with the same setlist as what he performed in the last year’s AFL Grand Final Replay entertainment.

  4. I did not watch it, but saw the Cristina bit on the News. Couldn’t ynderstand one word she sang. So it didn’t matter what words she sang. If you call that singing.

  5. Christina – yeah, deserves the criticism she gets. The BEP were awful – the actual show was impressive, but they definently are terrible live and the studio must do wonders. Then ruining a Guns and Roses classic. The BEP were abysmal and copped plenty on twitter and forums aroundthe world.

  6. Visually the Black Eyed Peas were fantastic but sounded like someone pulled the plug on something. They are extremely bad “Live” sorry i hated the performance because they clearly are not good live performers when it comes to the voices. Stick to he recording studio. I think the Halftime show as a whole was a big Fail!

Cristina also screwed up. Why did she have to do that? Mind you she has everyone talking and i guess thats one positive to come out of it.

  7. I was recording the Super Bowl for a friend – otherwise wouldn’t have had it on.
BEP were pretty boring, but Christina just screeched – ugh, a truly terrible noise!

  8. Yes Ross thats what I said, for me all the sports I want to watch are on FTA so why would I pay to see them on ESPN?

It took me a year to come to this reality and I feel so much better now with my other channels on Austar.

That said I didn’t watch the big game any way LOL

  9. I’m not sure if you’ll find your headline represents the unanimous view David. Aguilera may have stuffed up one very important line, but Fergie missed countless notes, amidst the visual feast and theatrics.

  10. The only “wowing” the Black Eyed Peas did was causing everyone to go “wow this is horrific”. Seems to be significantly more criticism of BEP than Christina on twitter as well.

  11. The half-time entertainment was spectacular but there were audio problems. I thought they would have been sorted out during rehearsals. Thanks also to One for showing the post-game show until 2.30pm AEDT while Ten returned to normal programs.

  12. The Audio on the half time show was Terible!!! and it wasnt our broadcast it was bad in the US too.
Also One/Ten seemed to have a few audio problems of their own… Quite a few times the picture froze and when it came back we had Spanish commentary.
