Graham Kennedy’s crown up for auction to aid Japan

Graham Kennedy's crown has been put up to auction with all proceeds to go to the Red Cross Appeal for Japan.

The King’s crown has been put up to auction to help raise money for the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Graham Kennedy’s crown was bought at auction in 2007 for $17,520 by former Sunrise executive producer Adam Boland.

Now Boland is putting it back up for auction via Bonhams Auctioneers with all proceeds to go to the Red Cross Appeal for Japan.

The crown, believed to have been presented to Kennedy by legendary newsreader Eric Pearce, is an iconic piece of Australian television memorabilia.

“I never thought I’d part with it – but I never thought I’d see images like this in a country I love so much,” Boland told TV Tonight.

“I’d particularly like to challenge Channel Nine to consider purchasing it. With the demolition of the old GTV9, purchasing the crown could be the perfect way to cling on to some of their very rich television history. And along the way, they’d be helping the people of Japan.”

Indeed. It would certainly make a great showpiece for Nine’s new foyer.

  1. The crown was presented to Kennedy by Eric Pearce on his final episode of “In Melbourne Tonight” in 1969 – the footage exists, and has been used in several highlights specials.

Contrary to what the Herald-Sun stated, it wasn’t presented on the Final episode of “In Melbourne Tonight” – the program continued for a full year after Kennedy’s departure…

  2. I can see the special 9 will run, live coverage hosted by Staurt Wagstaff and Noelene Browne from the new foyer. They can’t keep running 2.5 Men forever.

  3. It seems only right that Nine has it. Can I suggest a primetime event built around them placing the crown in the foyer, complete with clips of the dog peeing and the spaghetti episode of The Wilsons?

I was being sarcastic initially, but it actually isn’t the worst idea I’ve ever had.
