The Block looks beyond Sydney

Nine's next series of The Block could set in Melbourne or Brisbane if producers find a suitable location.

Nine’s next series of The Block could set in Melbourne or Brisbane if producers find a suitable location.

A Nine spokeswoman confirmed to the Herald Sun that producers had extended their search for properties beyond Sydney.

So far the series has only ever been located in Sydney: in Bondi, Manly and Vaucluse.

For its second season there were strong rumours of St. Kilda and Elwood being possible locations, but it never eventuated.

Producers are now understood to be scouring flats in Richmond and East Melbourne. Presumably anywhere with a nearby Freedom store.

The show, will return for a fourth run this year, but has been filmed only in Sydney to date.

The last series was filmed in the harbourside suburb of Vaucluse.

The series did good business for Nine last year and is tipped to return ahead of Nine’s new Jamie Durie series, Top Design.

As one source joked, “If Nine get stuck finding a place then they could always renovate the old Bendigo St studios.”

  1. Well David,
Mount Gambier, although one of South Australia’s tourism hotspots, is actually an incredibly dull place to live and the people here get pretty depressed because our personalities are eclipsed by the wonders of the Blue Lake. However last year a shining beacon of hope- The Block 2010 – entered our lives and we fell in love with those two crazy kids, Brent and Chez. I think it was because we could relate to them so well, also Chez was particularly witty. Anyway eventually the whole thing spiralled into a weekly ritual- Wednesday nights the pub was packed as we watched, enthralled in this quality television program. So we’ve been waiting and waiting for news of the new season, hopefully before too long it will grace our plasma screen tvs again.

  2. But when will it air?!!
The whole of Mount Gambier have been in a suspended state of intense anticipation ever since the final show of last year. We cannot sleep, nay Function, being kept in the dark like this- like kidnapped children kept hostage in a sinkhole. Who will be our new golden couple? Our new Brent and Chez? Our new Brez? (not that anyone could take the place they have in our hearts. Still, there is a vacancy very close by.) Tell us when Channel Nine!!

  3. @vinny

Perth would make for an interesting shoot. But with more viewers on the east coast – and no doubt more equipment, hosts, etc – the money probably keeps shows like the Block in the biggest capitals.

  4. i think 9 would be smart to have the block twice a week, and Top Design all in the schedule at the same time around midyear when masterchef is finishing up in (have them in 8;30 timeslots). that way even if they are flops it is still worth doing because they are saturating the airways with renovation shows so that Ten’s “The Renovators” starts out on a back foot.

If “The Renovators” is another Masterchef, ch9 (and 7 to a lesser extent) are stuffed. may as well get ahead of the ball now rather than try to rip it down after it is a hit.

  5. Nearby Freedom store? I doubt that’s necessary! In the latest series, the one they went to from Vaucluse was located at Artarmon, some 18km’s away!

It always baffled us as to why they had to go over the bridge to get a lamp.
