X Factor is judge’s choice

Update: Kyle Sandilands has confirmed he is not returning to The X Factor, but indicates the other judges are all keen to resume.

In announcing X Factor‘s return, Seven conspicuously left out any confirmation of judges or host.

But it was keen to get the preliminary audition tour underway (that’s the one in which no judges are required).

Today the Daily Telegraph reports only Guy Sebastian is a lock on and that Kyle Sandilands isn’t keen to return due to the time commitment that is required.

Sandilands is known to enjoy being at the centre of TV talent shows, but last year was criticised for not spending enough time mentoring his acts -a pivotal part of the format.

Sandilands has stated on his 2DAY FM radio program he was unlikely to return.

“Kyle hasn’t got the time to devote to the mentoring element of the show,” a source said. “His media commitments are such that he isn’t always available to travel interstate to meet contestants, and the midweek records are almost an impossibility for him. He failed to turn up to a lot of the mentoring stuff last year.”

But who would replace him? Dicko is busy with his new project on another network. It will need another marquee name to fill the chair.

Ronan Keating was always enthusiastic about the show last year and will relocate to Australia next month to shoot a film, Mark Lampress’ Goddess. He would be a good chance to return.

That would just leave Natalie Imbruglia.

Seven also hasn’t clarified if The Xtra Factor will resume but the show is likely to have taken a haircut in order to return so Natalie Garonzi fans may be left waiting. Time will tell.

UPDATED: Sandilands has confirmed on radio he is not returning to the show, and says that Seven is now re-considering whether or not it will return the show.

“Ronan and Natalie do want to go back,” he said. “I spoke to them last week – both of them rang me because I’ve said that I’m not going back. I’m not doing it.

“Not because I didn’t like it. I thought the show was great and it was great fun to do but it’s just too hectic, it’s too much work. So, I’ve told Channel Seven, no.

“Will they bring it back? I don’t know. If they do, I’m not on it as a permanent judge. They even said would I do something part time? I said, I don’t know possibly, it depends what it is.”

  1. Molly the man in the hat Meldrum would be great. The only problem is that he could be still contracted to Foxtel unless he is still contracted to 7.

  2. by the looks of it kyle thinks the show is about him. oh what a surprise. did anyone read the article, you can tell he has tug every morning while looking at himself. if they want to bring it back fine. i would have lowered the age limit to try and make a motza out the tween craze. that’s bordering child abuse. moly medrum would be perfect for this role.

  3. What about Jimmy Barnes, Angry Anderson, Jon Stevens, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Kate Cebrano, Gina Jeffreys, Kasey Chambers, the Bull sisters, Wendy Matthews, so much more Aussie talent besides radio dj’s….

  4. I enjoyed last season of the X Factor. I think it should return later in the year probably in a better time slot. As far as the hosts or the personel. I would like it if all would return. Kyle was entertaining and was the voice of the lamens person, Natalie and Ronan were the intelectual musicians with over a decade of experience and Guy the youngster in the industry who knows what is best at the time. However i can only see half of them coming back Ronan and Guy as far as Natalie Garonzi i think she should be back i enjoyed her the most and ofcourse she was Hot hot hot!

  5. For the show to really succeed they need a big draw-card. Since this is Simon Cowell’s baby perhaps he should be comming over to judge. Don’t know where he would find the time between Xfactor UK and US though.

  6. not sure if i will be interested in the show without Kyle. he was what made the show entertaining. kyles departure from Idol was what ended up getting the show axed, i think X will go down the same path. he can’t be replaced. since Ronan is there would the replacement likely be from overseas? i am yet to hear any good Australian suggestions.

i think anyone that says the last season ratings were “dissmal” needs to recheck what the ratings were. “not spectacular” maybe, but in a landscape where 2 of the 3 main channels struggle to get a single show over 1mil and X factor was getting 1mil sometimes well over 1mil for 3 hours a week the ratings were pretty good. if 7 didn’t renew it i’m sure 9 or ten would.

  7. I’m disappointed Kyle won’t be on it this year. His witty comments made up for the lack of talent. Can’t think who would be a suitable replacement. Such a pity Bernard King isn’t still alive, he use to tell it like it was.

  8. Love or hate this show it is a platform for would be new artists and a great learning experience for all, whether win or lose! I would love to hear more really constructive criticism without the hurtful put downs although I guess thats what helps the ratings!

  9. Surely they will cut costs in some areas for this second run. The money the spent on the show last year only gave modest returns although to be fair, it had a very tough timeslot. It’s not that surprising it is returning though. Given Seven’s strong performance, they most likely don’t want to rock the boat too much and hoping it the audience will grow, even just slightly.

  10. I would not be surprised if Syco have granted a bit of a discount in order to keep the brand in Australia.

@Trent If Dannii doesn’t re-sign with X Factor UK, that is a brilliant idea.

@Mike What the winner has gotten up to since he was on the show really has nothing to do with the show itself.

  11. Yep, i can easily do without Kyle. I have always liked Guy, so his return would be welcome in my household and Natalie I warmed to from last year’s series – not having really done so before. Hopefully Luke returns too, he is an energetic and convivial host. What about a Daryl Braithwaite type – someone from that vintage to be the senior mentor – or a rocker – from Mentals or Hoodoo Gurus?

  12. Why in the world would Seven be going again with this. What sponsor would ever want to be associated with this. Its ratings were very disappointing and the winner trashes hotel rooms and gets into pub fights.

Given the dissmal perfomace of this last year I”m very surprised.

  13. Cool that Guy wants to come back. Good riddance to Kyle I say. I just hope he is replaced by a female so we get an even split on the judging panel.

  14. Kyle will be no loss to this, he was totally out of his depth last year in having to actually mentor acts, given he has no music industry experience or knowledge, some of his song choices were awful. I remember Ronan saying at the end of last year that he would like to be back, so hopefully he will return, it would seem a bit odd to not have the winning judge return.

  15. Dannii. Could she give up X factor and move home, like she says she wants to! Kris is working here more than she is. Would be a good move. Except Natalie and her look alike!
