ABC2 rebrands Kids programming

‘ABC For Kids on 2’ is to be simply known as 'ABC 4 Kids.'

The ABC has launched a new logo for its kids programming on ABC2.

Previously known as ‘ABC For Kids on 2’ it is to be simply known as ‘ABC 4 Kids.’

From May 2nd the broadcaster will extend preschool hours on ABC2 from 6am to 7pm daily. ABC News Breakfast will also switch to ABC1.

ABC TV’s Head of Marketing and Promotions, Diana Costantini said, “The ABC TV channels have recently undergone a rebrand across the board and ABC 4 Kids completes the picture with a new logo and fresh look and feel.

“The logo has a visual relationship with the highly successful ABC3 brand but at the same time, we’ve created real definition. In fact, it’s a cheeky little logo that will certainly have strong appeal for our preschool audiences.”

ABC TV’s Controller of Children’s Television Tim Brooke-Hunt said “The new ABC 4 Kids logo allows our audience to easily locate their favourite ABC TV preschool content on one channel and online. So from May 2 if you are under the age of 5, ABC 4 Kids is the channel for you. ABC3 will continue to air 15 hours of programs a day for those over 5 years old.”

Programming on ABC3 remains unchanged.

  1. Would seem to be a better structure would be:

    ABC1 – Flagship channel
ABC2 – Slightly younger, more faring TV
    ABC Kids – 0-5 year olds 6am-6pm / ABCX – Teens and youth 6pm-6am
    ABC News 24 – news

  2. It works for me, I don’t know anyone under the age of 40 who manually enters assigned LCN numbers to change channel. Though a better solution would be to split it off to a separate LCN, separate channels share bandwidth all the time in the UK.

Does anyone know if it still falls under the remit of the ABC2 channel controller or if it falls under ABC Children Television like ABC3?

  3. Okaaay. So what is the point of having two dedicated kid’s channels?

To make the australian youth FAT couch potatoes?
    Way to go ABC.
If my 3 year old catches a glimpse of ABC2 on the weekends, she goes into overdrive. I of course, then send her outside to play.. but really, it shouldn’t be there in the first place. ABC3 should be little kids from 6am-10:30am, then big kids until 3pm, then little kids from 3-5pm, then big kids from 5pm-10pm.

    then..
    ABC2 –> 24/7 Rage channel please.

  4. The logo is good gives the channels some continuity. I do have a problem with ABC 3 and lack of good quality content like the ABC used to air. I want ABC 3 to air classic nickelodeon content which they had in the 90s, yes i am a bit nostalic but i truly believe that the shows we had as kids were way better then the current batch of shows. However i am resigning myself to the fact that the ABC has no money for those shows, maybe Network Ten can show them on 11 soon because i think they still may have the Nickelodeon output deal plus they would have more money then the public broadcaster.

  5. 4 Kids? What happens if five kids are watching? I would have thought that the ABC has a duty to promote literacy among kiddies. This pig-brained marketing exercise is, really, disgusting.

The ABC, especially when it comes to kiddie programming, must set the standard. This is not acceptable. The ABC should lead, not follow. Sack the kiddie responsible.

Kids today can’t spell, they appear to comprehend only one word in the English language, which is: Cool.

It’s been obvious for some time now that the ABC has been hijacked by the radical right, a flow-on from the stacking of the ABC board by John Howard. Nutters from the IPA.

It’s now apparent, in my estimation, that the ABC’s kiddie department has been over-run by poorly-trained kindergarten “teachers”, who know no better. That’s sad.

Why call it anything? A bright logo would do the job.

This does not affect me directly; our house is not now infested by kiddies, but I object to the lowering of ABC standards, as exemplified by this new logo for kids.

I will now proceed to make a formal complaint to the ABC.

  6. Apparently this logo received the most positive response from the trained panel of 5 years that were hired during this arduous and difficult process.

  7. It is rather confusing that 4Kids is on channel 22 and then at 7pm they suddenly change into something else for 6 hours. Surely there must be room for an ABC TV Classics channel that has old ABC programming from decades past to counter the garbage on the other channels?

I’m all for having 2 channels for children and a news channel, but there has to be room to show classic Australian television somewhere. Shows like Wildside, Grass Roots, D Generation, Recovery, Enough Rope, Strictly Dancing amongst others.

  8. it should be “ABC for Children on 2”
    kids are baby goats
and using the number 4 is lazy english and not teaching the children correct spelling

won’t someone please think of the children

  9. It’s beyond me why these programs aren’t on ABC3. There is no point in ABC3 showing teenage programs during the day, because They should be in school!

  10. Thinking about this, ABC2 and ABC4 Kids are now essentially two individual channels sharing one frequency.

    So really we have:

    ABC1 – flagship channel
    ABC2 – younger, offbeat
    ABC3 – 6-15 year olds
    ABC4 Kids – under 5 year olds
    ABC News 24 – news

  11. This is all still kinda confusing. If ‘ABC4 Kids’ is under 5, then ABC3 needs to be more clearly defined than just a kids channel – and not go off the air

  12. I didn’t know it was “ABC four kids”. What has this world come to when we teach our preschool children txt speech? Or am I the only one who thinks this is so wrong?

  13. The ABC 3 logo on the right hand upper corner in bright red is very distracting, especilly when it intrudes on to the faces of the characters on the show. the least they could do is make it transparent white, better if they put on the lower corner.
