ONE to relaunch with entertainment in May

ONE will relaunch on May 8th with more drama, factual and movies in HD but retain its premium sports as it chases males aged 25-54.

TEN has confirmed it will relaunch ONE in May with more entertainment.

The sports-channel will now include a mix of entertainment and sports aimed at males aged 25-54.

It will include a mix of premium sport plus additional drama, movies, and factual. Many will be in HD.

First run titles include Ricky Gervais’ An Idiot Abroad, Terriers, Lights Out, Breakout Kings, Everest.

It will also air Sons of Anarchy, new episodes of COPS, Airline, Long Way Round, plus shows that have already aired including Ice Road Truckers, Extreme Fishing with Robson Green

AFL, Moto GP and Formula One will remain on ONE.

The move follows the exit of sports boss David White and the failure of the channel to attract significant numbers on an on-going basis.

‘‘The bold, broad appeal of TEN along with the already proven performance of the distinctly youthful ELEVEN and now with the broader content offering for the male-skewed ONE positions us to capitalise on viewer and advertiser engagement,’’ chief programming officer David Mott said.

ONE has been trialling entertainment shows for many weeks and noticing an increase in its audience.

“We found that has already boosted our audience with a 27% share jump in those timeslots, so we know there is an appetite for this,” a TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight.

“Where we have things in full HD we will play them in full HD.”

Entertainment will air Monday – Fridays, with sport on weekends. ONE is aspiring to a 2.5% share with its new line-up.

TEN will also launch The Bolt Report, hosted by Andrew Bolt on May 8 on Sundays at 10am. Meet the Press will be move to 10.30am.

The announcements come on a day when TEN reported “unacceptable” half year results of
group earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) before Non-Recurring Items was $106.0 million, down 9.8 per cent on the prior corresponding period.

Interim CEO, Lachlan Murdoch said: “The half year results are not acceptable and
immediate action is already underway to address them. Disappointingly for TEN’s 1300 employees and 22,500 shareholders, these results do not demonstrate TEN’s underlying strengths and potential.”

“TEN is at a crucial juncture in its history. Free-to-air television is an excellent business with strong growth prospects. However, TEN has been under-delivering and this must change.”

“Importantly, this change has already begun.”

  1. “I predict no-one but diehard nutjobs will watch The Bolt Report. And those sort of people will be penniless white men living in caravans, who think they’re downtrodden. Hardly a market that advertisers want to appeal to.”

    Hey that’s me ! But I don’t like Bolt.

  2. This sounds dodgy. Murdoch is a major sharehold in Foxtel. and now Ten.
Fox Sports 1, 2, 3, FoxSportsHD Must have seen an impact due to OneHD.

So he shuts down OneHD as a major sports broadcaster.

What a joke! The government should do something about this!

  3. Silly Silly idea. They should have re-launched TEN HD alongside ONE HD, so during the week their HD channel is called Ten HD, then on weekends (and during major sporting events) the channel breaks away to One HD. By simply calling it all One HD, they will take away from an image that has represented quality consistent sports.

  4. Of all the new digital FTA channels, the only one I watched less was ABC 3, and that’s only because I occasionally tuned into the baseball for a bit. But honestly, tell me this isn’t about shoring up Murdoch’s hold on Pay TV sport…

  5. So I tweeted @One_NRL, and they tell me that One Week At A Time and The Game Plan aren’t been axed and are as “safe as houses”. Guess they didn’t see the flood, earthquake and tsunami footage this year 😛

  6. wanna attract a larger male audience?
call me ‘old fashioned’ (well… old enough to remember when “sex sells”)
How about running sports illustrated swimsuit shoots and other tasty items between the footy and car racing?
Do this and ONE HD will be on24/7 in my pool room!!

  7. I’m very happy that this is happening. Most of the time there isn’t much on ONE that interests me and I do like a bit of sport, but some of the stuff they show just wouldn’t interest anyone.

I’m noticing that ONE is starting to target 7mate’s audience, while GEM is starting to target 7TWO’s audience and seeing that MasterChef usually takes away some of Seven’s female-skewed audience, maybe Seven isn’t as safe as they might think when May 1st arrives.

  8. Hopefully they keep their US sports…not so keen on MLB but I do love my basketball (NBA only) and American football. Problem is, is it worth the $, considering they are shown live during the middle of the day — with recently the NBA prime time replay being dumped.

  9. @Chris , check the EPG , they arent showing 10 hours a day anyway its about 4 or 5 hours a day so its not too shabby i guess. At least its on FTA.

  10. To Windsor Bock..I’ll tape The Bolt Report, fast forward to the commercials, and note which ones are playing…that way I don’t have to listen to his drivel.Did you really think I’d actually listen to this right wing extremist?

  11. Well said Mac — OneHD is (was) the only channel that genuinely offered something different.

It will be a shame if it means no live sport during the week (I can happily watch an inning or two of Baseball).

However, it would appear OneHD will still be the pick of the ‘digital channels’. If they can prove to keep things consistent, then mostly everybody should be happy.

  12. I don’t care for sports so the channel was of no use to me, until now and this page. I didn’t see any point in having AFL on One and Ten at the same time, if one was Live and the other was delayed then thats a different story. who really cares if the AFL was in HD, why should you care about the picture quality. people Im sure care more about the gameplay instead of seeing the sweat on the players faces or crisp blades of grass.

Im sure Sport won’t be completely gone from One folks, just weeknights and there wasn’t any Live sport to play then anyway. Im pretty sure sport during the day and weekends will remain, so don’t panic! ch 11 is what One hd Should have been in the first place, what were they thinking?! wouldn’t think Netball would be too popular but they could always play the less popular sports during the day or after midnight..or 11 at the earliest.

this will be a much better channel in May, I’ll have a reason to watch it now.

  13. Surely golf will be one of the main things they get rid of. Goes for like 4 days, something like 10 hours a day. Ridiculous to have on FTA, it’s bad enough when a Fox Sports channel basically goes out of commission for a week because of a golf tournament.

  14. Gotta say this disappoints me. Whilst I don’t watch any sport at all, I liked that we had a bold commercial channel striking out which was truly unique and catered to passionate sports fans. I’m at a loss why it hasn’t been a bigger success though.

  15. i hope they still screen NBA, NFL, netball etc during the week and just get rid of the ‘crap’ (paint balling, bull riding etc) and replace it with the entertainment shows.

And i hope they keep one week at a time, game plan, pro shop etc etc

  16. For those that have not seen Terriers, I thoroughly recommend it – brilliant show, shame it did not get renewed 🙂

Breakout Kings is different, and with Lights Out, I lost interest after a few episodes.

  17. I hope ONE still finds time for Golf, it is good they are playing the Masters, but I would like it if they showed more than just a few.

And what about poker? Remember when ONE used to show poker? Maybe once a week was too much, but about about just showing 6 or so events a year?

I actually watch ONE more than ELEVEN but at this rate I will tune more to 7MATE and GO!….

“I just phoned Channel 10 and told them because they are putting on the Bolt Report on Sundays at 10 am, I won’t be buying any products that they adverise during that show.”

But now you’ll have to watch Bolt to know which products to boycott – you lose!

  19. Excellent move IMO> I’m only interested in AFL, and at last we might get a FTA channel with decent HD content. The others are a write-off.

  20. “Where we have things in full HD we will play them in full HD.”

Hmm, wonder if that includes Cops? It’s actually shot in HD, though has never even been shown here in widescreen.

This change was inevitable, given the way they’ve been seeding non-sport programming into the schedule the past couple of months.

Finally, the death of TenHD has been avenged!

  21. @ Michael Quinn, you talk about putting premium sport on ONE HD and then mention baseball? It’s a 3 hour snooze-fest! I’d prefer to watch Ice Road Truckers then that boring sport.

All in all, I think this could be definately a step forward for ONE HD if they play more entertainment during the weekday nights, as their isn’t alot of live sport during the week at night. I just hope they keep the Live element for the NBA and NFL when it returns next season.

If it’s main priority is still sport, no harm in having other programs on around it.
