ASTRA Week 17

Week 17

  1. @Russell with regards to Balls of Steel

I suspect the 195,000 figure is the peak audience for the first broadcast. So at one point during the broadcast 195,000 people were watching Australia wide.

59,000= 5 city metro average for 9.30 tuesday.
110,000=5 city metro + 4 regionals average for 9.30 tuesday
    134,000=5 city metro + 4 regionals average for 9.30 tuesday + the plus2 broadcast 2 hours later.
273,000=number of people who watched at least 1 minute of the broadcast any time during the ratings week.

  2. No. Each listing here is the 5 city metro highest rated broadcast for that particular show. It does not average the +2 broadcast or repeat showings during the week.

  3. Thanks for explaining David.

The story last week that mentioned 195,000 could not have been “reach” as according to the Astra link the reach was 273,000.

So the actual viewers for the first run ep nationally must be the 195k

Still, this list is completely flawed.

Sports are not repeated, so those ratings are going to be for one telecast. Other shows are repeated often up to 5 times a week (inc daytime) so those ratings are going to be much much smaller. That’s why sport always occupies the Top 20 spots.

So the sports shows on the list are for one off telecasts – all other shows are averages inc repeats. It’s apples and oranges!

Pay TV needs to put out an overnight ratings report daily just like the networks. With Top 5 market ratings for shows. The same system as the networks so they can be compared.

    1. Foxtel says 195,000 was Reach, I believe for two broadcasts on the premiere night. I think ASTRA reach may include extra broadcasts. You are correct in noting sport is one-off and our dramas etc. are repeated.

  4. Russell: trust me it’s far from a perfect science when it comes to Pay TV figures, but I can only work with info I am supplied.

Firstly, at the top of those figures it indicates 5 City Metro. As I have indicated in previous posts these are an average of all broadcasts. As we know Pay works on a model of repeat viewing, so it is unfair to draw parallels with FTA. That’s one of the reasons the Pay TV lobby is reluctant to issue full disclosure on all their shows. I get that reluctance, but at the same time there are some of us here who can explain this in the context of a story and help educate.

I try and give all the info which is why I link to ASTRA. The story last week was based on data supplied by Foxtel which I assume was Reach for Metro + Regionals for both broadcasts. It declined to clarify. Therefore all the figures are correct, just depends what measure you care to use.

  5. Disappointing to see on last night’s Balls of Steel that two of the characters from last week’s ep were on again. It also happened to be the two most high-profile characters (Neg and Kerley) – hope this isn’t a trend throughout the series. It would have been good to see some of the other characters.

I did think the Bunny Boiler one deserved to win – it was the only one that made me laugh out loud!

p.s. please no more ‘sack and crack wax’ segments … once was enough!

  6. And then looking back at lost weeks post it says Balls of Steal got 195,000.

So we have 59k on this list, 110k on the Astra website and 195k on last week’s post.

Obviously three different ways of calculating the numbers – could you find out what each one is?

    Would be very interested. Cheers!

  7. David – how is this list calculated exactly?
The Astra website says Balls of Steal got 110,000 viewers for its Tuesday 930 telecast. (And that is actual viewers, not reach)

Is this list all the repeats factored in and averaged? Thus making the numbers look a lot smaller?

Also is this list national or just 5 cities?

  8. I love Balls of Steel Australia, hope it gets another season. Last night’s episode was great as well… Neg and the Bunny Boiler segments were my favourites!
