This week on A Quiet Word with Shaun Micallef, Tony Martin chats to the comedian, writer, actor and game show host about some of his earlier works.
Micallef tells an amusing tale about how Nine had no idea what his ABC series The Micallef Program was about when it offered him the chance to do Micallef Tonight.
In a conversation that veers all over the shop, Micallef recalls his early stage performances and their reviews, reveals how he snuck onto national television through the back door, and explains how he has juggled several different ‘versions’ of himself in his various TV projects.
There are frequent insights, several cheap laughs and a mystifying reference to Chester Conklin in this candid and amusing Quiet Word with the often misspelt Shaun Micallef.
It airs 9:30pm Saturday on ABC1.

They could swap notes about their shows getting axed on Channel Nine, not forgetting Tony’s effort on The Mick Molloy Show in 1999.
Perhaps the two funniest TV shows I’ve ever seen were The Micallef Program and Newstopia. He’s wasted on that kids game show on Ten but when he gets the a*se I’m sure he’ll go back to doing his comedy shows again.
Interesting to note:
Full Frontal (ch 7)
The Micallef Program (ABC)
Welcher & Welcher (ABC)
Micallef Tonight (ch 9)
Newstopia (SBS)
Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (ch 10)
Where can he go next, Foxtel?
Two of my favourite people on TV. This is gonna be good.
@ Matt J – It’s a video cassette recorder, and assuming you are over the age of 6 you would be familiar with it.
What’s a VCR?
Really looking forward to this. It’s always interesting to hear more about Shaun’s previous work and I hope he talks about any future works.
Awesome, my 2 favorites, looking forward to this, thank god for iView otherwise id miss it, (or be relegated to dusting off my VCR to record it).
I’ve really enjoyed this series. It’s fascinating to hear comedians talk candidly about their lives without being “on”, though most of them (Ross Noble) are always funny anyway, even when talking about losing his home and all his possessions in the bushfires. And (sigh) Shaun Micallef, the thinking woman’s funny man … really looking forward to this episode.
Oh, goody. Just wish that the chats went on for longer.
I’m such a huge fan of these two guys.
I wish they were on the box more often in roles worthy of their great talents.
Looking forward to this so much. Hopefully mousePatrol gets discussed too
