Axed: United States of Tara. Renewed: Nurse Jackie

Showtime has pulled the pin on Toni Collette's wonderful United States of Tara but renewed Edie Falco's Nurse Jackie.

Disappointing news today from Showtime which has pulled the pin on Toni Collette’s wonderful United States of Tara.

Collette, who played Tara across three seasons, won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role. But while it generated a solid amount of buzz, the show never really caught on with sizable numbers of viewers in the US. It drew about 1.9 million fans between live and time-shifted viewing, but numbers for the third season dropped by 30%.

Season Three is yet to air on ABC1 but its season finale will now serve as the series finale.

But there was better news for Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie, renewed for a fourth season, along with a previously announced second season of The Borgias.

Nurse Jackie‘s latest season is currently fast-tracked to ELEVEN at 9:30pm Tuesday nights.

  1. Good stuff with Nurse Jackie is a rather dark show and you can see why Showtime would produce it. Tara, I enjoyed but there is only so much u can do with that show with Tara’s different split personalty characters. Is there anyomre Californication as on 11 they keep running repeats after Nurse Jackie at the moment on a constant repeat cycle with Hank lecturing at college and being a woman wispherer with the shagging of the Dean’s wife and the stripper student!

  2. I’m with Mr Do-bee on this one. I think the acting and writing were distinctively first class, but it was difficult terrain, and fell somewhere between drama and what was labelled comedy – but it was a tough ask for an audience. I can;’t say i enjoyed it, in the literal sense, but loved all the principal cast – especially the kids and Rosemarie deWitt. Toni Colette will continue to shine in anything she is cast in or creates for herself.

  3. I’m not surprised. I had a feeling it was starting to flatline when it stopped winning awards. I’m still not happy about it though 🙁

  4. Tara was an interesting idea that has probably run it’s course. Impressive performances from the actors. Just hope the story is tied up with a satisfying conclusion.
