Disappointing news today from Showtime which has pulled the pin on Toni Collette’s wonderful United States of Tara.
Collette, who played Tara across three seasons, won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role. But while it generated a solid amount of buzz, the show never really caught on with sizable numbers of viewers in the US. It drew about 1.9 million fans between live and time-shifted viewing, but numbers for the third season dropped by 30%.
Season Three is yet to air on ABC1 but its season finale will now serve as the series finale.
But there was better news for Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie, renewed for a fourth season, along with a previously announced second season of The Borgias.
Nurse Jackie‘s latest season is currently fast-tracked to ELEVEN at 9:30pm Tuesday nights.

Hopefully this announcement isn’t too late to see more Patton Oswalt in season three of Bored to Death. And Brie Larson in anything. Or preferably, everything.
There was never enough in Tara’s pretty superficial premise, to be interesting for multiple seasons. It would’ve made a better TV movie.
@Craig – Yes!!!! Am loving him in Parenthood!! Let’s keep fingers crossed.
That is very disappointing news but in my little dream world Toni Colette and Rachel Griffiths would scoot back to Australia to star in a top notch TV drama. Ah well, it’s nice to dream …
@ Mitch, thank you very much.
Unfortunately July is ages away, I will have to sulk into my undies until then 🙂
Am I the only one in the world who thinks Tara is the most over-rated program in the world? An inaccurate and superficial portrayal of mental illness and a lot of overacting from Toni Collette in my humble opinion!
Goonies – Breaking Bad is back July 17
Sad but not too surprising, where are the viewers for Good shows!?! Oh right, watching all that moving wallpaper, glorified YouTube, talent show crap!
…hmm, bitter much!? 😉
Wow that was half surprising.
S3 was really good, sad that we don’t get to see how that all plays out.
I’ve been loving Season 3 of Tara. So sad we won’t get another season of this series. Love Jackie too. Haven’t loved Season 3 of Jackie as the previous two but still keen to watch it.
I’m devestated by the axing of Tara I loved it! I’m yet to watch any of Season 3, was waiting until it had finished its run in the US.
At least we had 3 full seasons and quality at that! 🙂
Disappointing and as someone else said I hope they wrap it up properly and don’t leave us all hanging!
When is Breaking Bad returning – anyone have any idea?
Well that does suck, a great show will be missed. But at least we got three seasons out of it.
Toni and Rachel Griffiths are free… Muriel’s Wedding 2 anyone??
Nurse jackie has become compulsive tv for me – subtle nuances, drama, comedy and tragedy – love it.
Oh man, I’m devestated. This latest season has been brilliant, very sad to see this cancelled.
Incredibly disappointing.
United States Of Tara was a wonderful show, far better than Nurse Jackie, and far better than anything else on Showtime. But, when nobody watches there’s only really one course of action for a network to take.
Sorry about Toni;s show….but really glad Nurse Jackie is getting another round…Love that show!
Only upside to this news is this frees up John Corbett to reprise his role on Parenthood in S3.
Great news about Nurse Jacki- I love it !!
Aw. What a shame. The show has a great atmosphere to it. I like that it’s different.
No! I love United States of Tara, Way better than Jackie, but in saying that I am happy that Jackie got another seasons, am still a fan of it.
Showtime should have given Tara some more time and a lot more promotion.
Devastated. I have no idea we will be left hanging and I hate when that happens.
season 3 has been great but really dark. Not surprised the audience is starting to switch off. It will be sad to see it finish
Well that sucks, btw can somebody create a show for both Rachel Griffiths & Toni Collette. I’d watch that in a heartbeat.
