Returning: The Block

Nine's fourth season of The Block features 4 houses, 8 couples, and begins on June 20th.

Nine took advantage of its big State of Origin audience last night to promote some of its upcoming titles -a smart idea, given numbers have been down of late.

It rolled out shiny promos for Underbelly: Razor, which has been shooting since early April, and The Block.

The Block is to be stripped across 7pm weeknights with 4 adjacent houses in Richmond in Melbourne. Interestingly, there are 8 couples this series.

Nine’s promo saw a giant Moustrap-style boardgame with couples climbing ladders, falling down holes, dodging giant paintbrushes and dice.

As with the very successful first season, the couples appear to be predominantly young and Anglo-Saxon.

Nine is set to launch the fourth season on Monday June 20th.

  1. Garbage. This won’t solve 9’s 7pm problems.I would rather see the relaunch of 2.5 men still with the original Alan and Jake plus this new Charlie Harper on right after Current Affair instead

  2. Cast the best people, not those with the most appropriate ethnicity.

I’m usually the first to hate on them but at least Ch9 is trying to update itself. It might come off like your grandma doing the macarena at a wedding but it’s kind of endearing in a goofy way. Stripping this show is a big move, that in itself shows there’s a bit of change in the programming mentality.

  3. This will just be yet another expensive failure for Nine. The Hey Hey fans who want their show back will see to that. You heard it here first.

  4. This won’t solve Nines 7pm Problems in the long term. They would have been better off introducing a News/Chat Show at that time of Night.I would personally rather watch Charlie Sheen or Karl Stefanovic instead of a home renovating program if 2.5 men was still around for the former though.

  5. Chk Chk: Over the 4+ years of this blog I have frequently noted the diversity of contestants in Reality TV because it has been such a point of difference the genre has over dramas. It was our first glimpse of the cast, of course I would note their mix. Are you suggesting I make an exception for The Block? Rather than make it “sound so bad”, I noted similarities to the “very successful” first season.

  6. I know they’re trying to be “cool” by choosing a Taio Cruz song but “Dynamite?” Really? Are they going to blow up the houses, or is the show just gonna bomb?

  7. @chk chk
what is negative about ‘As with the very successful first season, the couples appear to be predominantly young and Anglo-Saxon’? ‘very successful’ sounds positive to me…
in my opinion referring to non-Anglo-Saxons as ‘ blacks, Asians and Muslims’ would be negative. I mean really ‘blacks’??? that’s appropriate???

  8. Stripping is a good idea. But for such a big investment the promos are terrible. Looks like theyve got the work experience kid in the graphics department to whip them up in a few mins. That would never fly at 7 or ten.

  9. David, why do you make it sound so bad if casting only consists predominantly of white Anglo-Saxon?? Maybe blacks, Asians and Muslims didn’t audition for the series??

  10. I thought The Block promo was woeful but the Underbelly: Razor one was good. I also found it interesting they decided to promote the Rugby Union world cup last night. I’m sure the NRL was thrilled.

  11. The big question is what’s going to happen with The Block on the regional WIN Network where A Current Affair currently occupies the 7pm timeslot?
