Another Nine promo gets it so wrong

A Channel Nine Melbourne promo for The Block is rife with dated footage of the city -and even a shot of Sydney.

Channel Nine promos have come in for a bit of slap lately but it’s hard not to admonish them when they are as clumsy as their latest promo for the “Made in Melbourne” season of The Block.

The footage is so old it must have been put together by someone from another city.

Amongst some of the telltale errors in this clip are:

– green and gold trams. That design went out when the tram network was privatised in 1998.
– the Eureka tower still under construction. It was completed in 2006.
– Annie playing at the Regent Theatre. That was 2001.
– another Yarra shot without any Eureka Tower, nor Freshwater Place, completed in 2005.
– a shot of the MCG with an old stand that was demolished ahead of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

But the biggest most gob-smacking error of them all?

A shot of Sydney.

At 7 seconds into this “Melbourne” promo is a skyline of Sydney, taken from Darling Harbour.

Seriously guys, are you actually getting paid for this?

  1. I noticed most of those errors the first time I saw the promo. Stupid Nine, promoting it so heavily as being a Melbourne tv show with blatantly out-of-date shots of the city, and a clearly non-Melbourne skyline… terrible.

  2. Oh dear… You can clearly see Sydney Tower all lit up! They probably thought it’s not the Opera House or Harbour Bridge, it’s at night nobody can tell the difference.

  3. And don’t forget the hokey ‘Made in Melbourne’ tags only screened in Melbourne, nowhere else. No doubt these promos were not made in Melbourne!

  4. Paid extremely well in fact! It also raises the question…what does ‘made’ mean. It is being shot in Melbourne, but everything else is happening in Sydney. Where does a show like this really get made?

  5. While The Block is “coming soon” on 9 promos, NBN Newcastle’s promos for the same show announce it starts on June 20

  6. just reeks of a rush job… and having no actual footage of the show.

I’m not sure what they are trying to acheive with the Made in Melbourne stuff… if the show is crap, why does it matter where it’s made…

  7. All the promos just look so tacky. For such a big investment u’d think they’d go to a bit of effort. If this was 7 or ten the promo would be world class.

  8. LOL so it’s pretty obvious the promos weren’t ‘made in Melbourne! Yes the trams look particularly out of date. Amateur hour continues at Nine!

  9. Good call David. Obviously the budget didn’t stretch to new footage.

Subliminal Sydney message is interesting! Guess they can’t really leave!
