Another Nine promo gets it so wrong

A Channel Nine Melbourne promo for The Block is rife with dated footage of the city -and even a shot of Sydney.

Channel Nine promos have come in for a bit of slap lately but it’s hard not to admonish them when they are as clumsy as their latest promo for the “Made in Melbourne” season of The Block.

The footage is so old it must have been put together by someone from another city.

Amongst some of the telltale errors in this clip are:

– green and gold trams. That design went out when the tram network was privatised in 1998.
– the Eureka tower still under construction. It was completed in 2006.
– Annie playing at the Regent Theatre. That was 2001.
– another Yarra shot without any Eureka Tower, nor Freshwater Place, completed in 2005.
– a shot of the MCG with an old stand that was demolished ahead of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

But the biggest most gob-smacking error of them all?

A shot of Sydney.

At 7 seconds into this “Melbourne” promo is a skyline of Sydney, taken from Darling Harbour.

Seriously guys, are you actually getting paid for this?

  1. sorry to make it a tram blog but Joe most of the tram shots arnt city circle trams by any stretch. and being from Melbourne I always assumed all channels interstate did this patriotic crap- any Melbourne made show on 7 also tends to have a made in Melbourne tag on it somewhere

  2. Ch9 digital GO! had some technical problems on Sunday arvo. They played some cartoons instead of Married With Children. Then a blank screen, a bit of this and then a bit of that, before order was restored. The cartoons? Looney Tunes, how appropriate.

  3. C’mon guys – surely I’m not the only one who suspects that Sydney shot was not a mistake? Someone at Nine Sydney is clearly taking the p**s by sneaking that in.

  4. How much more offensive and off putting can this joke of a 3 city “network” become? Incidentally they are trotting out Rima again tonight on aca- I suppose the freak show must go on.

  5. David the green and gold trams are currently used for the free shuttle service which loops the city. That design is a historic ‘Melbourne’ esign and claerly identifies the cities tram service. The shot also was not in 1998 as if you pause it at 6 seconds when the camera is on the green and gold tram you will see modern cars and also the new Australian Open logo.

  6. Forget about the shot of Sydney and that they are doing the boring old ‘Melbourne is better kids’ trick for the Melbournites. Can we please talk about the fact that that is one Ugly promo. I think I could probably put a whole lot of logos on buildings using iMovie on my mac. Amateur hour over at Nine.

  7. haha. On the Youtube video, I looked earlier and one of the (two) comments said about the Sydney skyline, and was slightly critical of the promo.

Now all that’s there is “Comment removed”. 😉

  8. I think some of the criticisms are a little harsh. A 5 year old could do better? Hmmmm…Footage errors aside, channel nine seems to be of the view Melbournians are extremely insecure and require constant reassurance that their city matters. If I was from Melbourne this constant patronising would annoy me.

  9. I like this promo? haha.

That said, you’d never catch me dead watching a show like this. At least the BBT, as lame and cliched as it is, offers an alternative to Home and Away and The 7pm Project in the form of comedy. The Block is a decade-old regurgitated concept Nine have brought back from the dead because they have literally nothing else left to air. Lets watch people renovate houses! LOL.

What’s next off the dusty, stale shelf of ideas from decades past, Hey Hey Its Saturday? Oh, wait…

  10. ABC stuffed up last night too with a promo for this wednesdays spicks and specks the voice over guy said one of the guests is going to be Jane Badley instead of Badler

  11. @Bass – and here’s a title for that sequel – “Who’s p!ssing on Kerry Packer’s grave?”.

I can’t wait for the fanbois to come on here and try to defend this one.

  12. Could the last person to leave the Channel Nine studios please turn out the lights? No, correction, could the last clown to leave Channel Nine studios please turn out the lights? My God, that promo is a real shocker, absolutely pitiful. Are work experience kids from the local high school running Nine’s in-house promo department at the moment? That looks like some Year 7 art students ran amok cutting and pasting clip art signs into a piece of 90’s stock footage. Pathetic and thoroughly deserves the avalanche of scorn and contempt being heaped upon it. And surely I can’t be the only person whose patience is being sorely tested by the constant “made in Melbourne” references?

  13. It’s ironic that the made in Melbourne promo wasn’t made in Melbourne. But, given it’s the 21st Century, are these silly promos still necessary? Come on Melbourne, grow up.

  14. mistakes like this just make it too easy, lol, although even without the mistakes the ad is lame making it seem as if the who of melbourne is obsessed with the block, although it no where near as bad as last years ridiculously dramatic ad which tried to make it look like a blockbuster movie.
