The Age Green Guide has a lengthy and fascinating feature today in which they nominate all they love about television.
And what a list.
“We think television cops a lot of bad press. Some of it is warranted: there’s a lamentable load of tripe on the telly. But what can be overlooked amid the howls of protest, the eruptions of snarky criticism and the condescending references to ”the idiot box” is how much great stuff there is, too,” it notes.
There’s something for everybody on this love-letter list, and for every nod there are others accompanying it as form of runners-up too.
You should check out the list in all its detail.
Here in no particular order is a precis of their choices (some of which are Melbourne only):

I love the new series downton abbey. When is it coming back for season 2?
Downton Abbey, the cream of the crop.
Where is Doctor Who, Mythbusters etc.
Wow, the Age has at least 9 TV journalists. Why so many?
Hustle and returning soon, Silent Witness – both should definitely be on the list!
Would agree with one of the commenters on the link, British tv is missing from the list, something like Doctor Who.
No Parenthood but Frasier is on the list?
The Circle today were quick to point out they made the list.
Ben Elton Live from planet Earth wasn’t there? OMG
‘Spooks’
It’s a pretty good list. I thought that the list of things that they didn’t like was prob more telling, altho’ they didn’t include the almost universal bugbear of programs starting late.
Some very arguable things on that list.
I agree the best show on tv is Community.
Larry&kylie
Natalie garonzi
Corneilia frances
I thought we were supposed to mention shows Not on the list….offspring is on the list….durr…..I only mentioned it in the context of hot aussie babes that just happened to include Asher Keddie wearing a plant in last nights ep….
Thumbs up – Brian Taylor, The Circle, football coverage and Offspring. Thumbs down – Dr Phil, ACA/TT, and Charlie Pickering.
The Circle? Dr Phil? This article isn’t worth the paper its written on. And seeing as I’m reading it on the net, that’s nothing!
Well I was going to say ‘Community’ but a) it gets a sideways mention via The Soup, and b) I think Woody summarised it very well!
Offspring has picked its game up this season. I nearly dropped it, which is unheard of with me and a JE Production.
Offspring. Loved it since day one but as the article says season 2 is ‘exponentially better’. Great to see it crack the million last night, shame the season will end 2-3 weeks.
Offspring certainly is brilliant this season.
since downtown abbey is already on the list. The best on the the box has to include Sherlock.
Alison Brie
Gillian Jacobs
They didn’t really choose between ACA or TT. Both are bastions of intellectual Australian journalism aren’t they?
Otherwise it has to be the abundance of hot aussie babes on TV…..from the red Carpet WAGS to Asher Keddie in Offspring last night….uh uh uh
For me best on the box right now is Offspring it is an absolutely stellar show, there are not many shows on TV that grab my attention quite like offspring does.
