Where will the TEN axe fall?

Are TEN Late Night News, Sports Tonight and 6:30 with George Negus facing the chop?

After The Australian reported yesterday that jobs would go at TEN on Monday, today media are speculating as to which on-air faces might be in the firing line.

The Daily Telegraph reports that insiders believe it is TEN Late Night News and Sports Tonight are set to go first and that newsreader Sandra Sully could be the first high-profile casualty.

The Herald Sun also raises doubts about 6:30 with George Negus, which is hovering around the 500,000 mark in early evenings.

The timing is pretty bad for TEN.

On Monday it launches its new show Can of Worms, which may be what some employees think of Lachlan Murdoch’s strategic review. Later in the week TEN has a media launch for The Renovators -another apt title?

We’ll know soon enough….

  1. Shouldn’t Andrew Bolt be given the chop?

Nah! Lachlan wouldn’t want to upset Gina or his dad.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they axed Negus and Sully – and replaced it with more of Bolt and other rightwing commentators.

Ten is going to become the next OneTel – and surprise surprise – the man that destroyed that company is heading Ten.

No AFL, No HD sports, More Bolt and More crap like Swamp People and Ice Truckers!

    Ten – seriously????

  2. please not Sandra- channel ten – put her back at 10.30pm with out fail …and make sure she starts at 10.30pm and people will watch..it simple….if she is on at 11.22pm or 11.09 after a show that has already been seen them people will not watch. ……….

  3. Amused that people would stop watching the news simply because Sandra Sully wasn’t reading it. Maybe you people should look at your priorities in life.

  4. If Sandra and the late news go I will not watch Ten News ever again. Bring late news back to 10:30 and push Negus Encore to 11.

I think Negus is great and the steady growth in audience since the shift to 6:30 demonstrate the potential. With patience I think it could be topping 600k by the end of August.

  5. There have been rumours that George Negus had until July to improve ratings or face teh chop and it looks like that was right. If Ten attempt to take on ACA and TT again, it will most likely be a downmarket tabloid show than an upmarket current affairs program. They’re mad if they get rid of the Late News. It was still the highest rating show at 10.30pm before Negus repeats pushed it back to 11pm.

  6. I would be surprised to if Sandra is a casualty. She has proven to be a valuable asset and a versatile one. But nothing that occurs in tv should surprise any of us!
My guess is that it will be mostly behind the scenes staff that will go.

  7. About the late news, there is big demand for late night information – Ten’s own successful ratings for Negus’ late repeat show that! Ten’s late news could re-model itself as slightly more “6:30-ish” and return to its normal timeslot. Surely they can work out a cost-effective model that keeps the late news. 20 years has shown there is a market there.

As for 6:00, it’s doing well. It’s holding up OK in its final half-hour. It is extremely cost-effective. Look at the ratings for last night – Ten’s 90-minute average from the less-populated 5:00pm slot beats Seven News in demos in key markets.

  8. What about cutting out 5 pm news to one anchor??, always intrigues me that when either Mal or Helen are away they are not replaced and they go solo, two hosts are a waste and now that it goes for hour and a half I don’t watch

  9. He would probably be happy to axe tens late night news offering, thinking more peole would watch the only other late news offering-sky news on his beloved foxtel. It’s all very sad!!!!

  10. It would be a shame to lose Sandra again in the late night spot. Quite enjoy watching her and catching the late news as I do not also get to see early evening news programs.
