Where will the TEN axe fall?

Are TEN Late Night News, Sports Tonight and 6:30 with George Negus facing the chop?

After The Australian reported yesterday that jobs would go at TEN on Monday, today media are speculating as to which on-air faces might be in the firing line.

The Daily Telegraph reports that insiders believe it is TEN Late Night News and Sports Tonight are set to go first and that newsreader Sandra Sully could be the first high-profile casualty.

The Herald Sun also raises doubts about 6:30 with George Negus, which is hovering around the 500,000 mark in early evenings.

The timing is pretty bad for TEN.

On Monday it launches its new show Can of Worms, which may be what some employees think of Lachlan Murdoch’s strategic review. Later in the week TEN has a media launch for The Renovators -another apt title?

We’ll know soon enough….

  1. Prediction:

Negus will go for sure, Bolt will replace him.
Ten News to go from state based to national (everything out of Sydney)

7PM Project will stay, it’s a ratings winner

Ten Late News will stay, they know sacking Sandra Sully will be a PR disaster.

  2. Jeepers first Peter Everitt, now Sandra Sully in the firing line. I wouldn’t be too sad to see her go as even though she has a high profile and has been at the forefront of many of the big breaking stories (eg: rescue of Stuart Diver, the events of 9/11 etc) i have not really warmed to her over the years. But i will say that it stinks that they would cut costs and drop a long time anchor.

  3. Not the 7pm project. It ain’t that bad considering that for years after Nine got rid of Temptation The people there had to make do with crappy US Sitcoms done to death as their only alternative

  4. Well TEN dumped Ron Wilson from the evening news….it has never been the same…If they get rid of Sandra Sully…..oh dear…..
But they will do what they want….no one really considered the viewer anymore…

  5. How about networks getting some fresh minds to run the networks. Young Murdoch, Gyngell and Packer are not in the league of their trailblazing fathers.
I do have respect for young Packer because he had the sense to get out and not try to copy his father. Ten only needs a bit of tweeking, not major surgery as it is doing ok. It has always been a little different than 9 and 7 and a lot of people like that. Murdoch needs to buy Channel nine as it’s the one that needs a major renovation.

  6. If they want George Negus to get rating, then they should make it a tabloid show like TT / ACA. I never watch George Negus and I regularly watch TT / ACA myself.

  7. I think the biggest problem is the 90 minutes of so called news and weather. How many times do we need to see tim bailey with the weather report and the traffic report , how can we see how the traffic is when we are stuck in a car.1 hour is more than enough. Also sandra sully is not a great newsreader anyway , shes average at best.

  8. I think it is pretty evident that if TEN is to sack Sandra Sully they will not only lose a beautiful, professional and awesome Presenter, they will lose even more of the market to a rival channel. TEN needs to stop and really think about their choices.
I watch the late news for Sandra, not the news (get enough of that during the day).

On another not, they are going to end up losing the Offspring viewers and yet again killing another great Australian Drama. They keep moving it around to different days and different times, TEN needs to remember that views have a lot of choice now and they don’t follow shows around like they use too.

  9. I think the Bolt Report and Can of Worms.

Not sure on the 90 minute news. TEN is a bit naughty and they hold back some stories for the 6pm broadcast, but I switch over at 6pm for Letters and Numbers on SBS.

Also on the weekends just stick with the 5pm news. As there’s no need to have a “repeat” at 6pm. They could always start the AFL earlier (while they still have it!).

  10. Let’s make a list and send it to Ten of shows to axe:

    1. Andrew Bolt
    2. George Negus (belongs on SBS)
    3. 7pm Project

And keep Sandra. Let her go at your peril, Ten

  11. I think ch10 should hand over total editorial control and presenting duties to Andy Bolt. If you are going to trash a news department, ya gotta do it well.

  12. How can Late News get any ratings with George encore in it’s timeslot. If the encore is so necessary then put it on at 11.15 after the Late News.

Sandra had better not go anywhere!

  13. I feel very sorry for the Ten people in the firing line. When will the axe fall at Nine I wonder – most of their topline management need to be shown the door, not the Ten team who have been doing so well. I just don’t get this at all – no justice in TVland thats for sure.

  14. Sandra is the best newsreader i’ve ever heard and seen read the news. Her assertive voice is one other newsreaders would die for!
Its dissapointing that 6.30 is repeated almost weeknight, bumping the Late news back even further!
Like TEN say, the Late News is the leading late news program, and it should stay that way. I don’t know why TEN keep moving programs around!

6.30 is fantastic! just let it grow…
the Late News is fantastic with Sandra.
but i think that the news at 5 only needs to go for 1 hour, like it used too, then they reset, and do a seperate 6pm new bulletin with a different newsreader, that way TEN compete more with Seven and Nine…

    just my thoughts…

  15. Do not let sandra go Ten or its all down hill from there.Lookwhat hapened when weekend news shifted.numbers have not returned,How about helping 6,30 with a new lead in show like simpsons or frasier.

  16. If Sandra is let go by Ten she will be snapped up straight away – im guessing by Channel Seven… I could see them trying to fill her in the space as the roumered third host of Sunrise…
