Wimbledon live across Australia

No more waiting. Seven will broadcast Wimbledon 2011 live throughout Australia on 7TWO, hosted by Todd Woodbridge.

From Monday June 20, Seven will broadcast Wimbledon 2011, live throughout Australia on 7TWO.

During the first week the live broadcast kicks off at 9pm (AEST) on 7TWO (7pm WST), and from 10pm on 7TWO during the second week.

Coverage will then continue on Seven from 11pm local time each night.

It marks a significant change from the late night broadcasts that have been traditionally offered by Nine, and a point of difference from primetime Australian Open matches on Seven.

All singles and doubles finals, as well as the singles’ semi-finals, will be live on Seven, and on 7TWO in some states.

The broadcast will be hosted by Todd Woodbridge with expert commentary from John Newcombe on the 40th anniversary of his third and final singles’ victory at the All England Club. The team also includes Rennae Stubbs and Sam Smith.

In addition, Seven will be taking commentary from a clutch of the biggest names in tennis via the host broadcaster BBC, among them John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Lindsay Davenport and Tim Henman.

Wimbledon 2011 marks the first time the Seven Network has broadcast this iconic British event. But as host broadcaster of The Australian Open for almost 40 years the network brings a wealth of experience and expertise in covering the game of tennis.

Viewers will enjoy the best two matches of each day’s play, exclusively live, while remaining plugged into all the action and colour around the grounds.

Seven’s Head of Sport, Saul Shtein, commented:

“This is an historic moment for Seven.

“As the home of The Australian Open, the AFL, V8 Supercars and the Melbourne Cup we have long been the premier sports broadcaster in Australian television. And now we can welcome Wimbledon to the mix, the Holy Grail of tennis.

“Having secured the first selection of the best two matches each day, viewers on Seven will enjoy the pick of the tennis crop. And best of all we can guarantee it will be live on either 7TWO or Channel 7 and it won’t cost them a cent.”

Host Todd Woodbridge said: “I can’t wait to give the viewers at home an intricate perspective of the Championships.

“Our commentary team has so much experience and success at the Championships; that inner knowledge of the pressures, traditions and expertise of playing on grass will make great viewing.”

In the lead-up to the tournament Channel 7 will also be airing:

• The Spirit of Wimbledon (11am Sunday June 5, 12, 19, 26 on 7TWO) – a four-part series that tells the compelling story of the oldest tournament in tennis. In 2011 Wimbledon celebrates its 125th anniversary and to commemorate the landmark occasion, this documentary series will look back at the history of the Championships.

• The Wimbledon Film (10am, Sunday June 19 on 7TWO) – a documentary on the definitive story of the 124th Championships in 2010.

• A 2011 Wimbledon Preview (11.30am Sunday June 19 on 7TWO) outlining the form of this year’s players.

  1. brilliant, finally those of us in Perth are going to be treated equally!

A rare good move by Seven, hopefully they do the same for the footy soon by showing matches live on digital channels.

  2. @JB

Don’t you read! Its Live accross Australia. Regarldess of the timezone you get it when it starts.

Good thing here is that Seven have taken the initiative to put it on its multi-channels.

Lets hope the Australian Open does the same come January. IMO this should be on 7mate but i am not complaining. Its amazing how all of a sudden people are saying Seven is a lot better than Nine when it comes to sport. I have been trying to tell people that for years. Nine treat their viewers with no respect.

  3. Wimbledon is a perfect fit for 7two, just about nearly everything on that channel is from Britain so they’ve certainly picked the right channel as opposed to 7Mate. Personally I don’t mind if they stop shows like repeats of The Bill, Pie in the Sky, Frost, etc. to make way for the tennis.

  4. This is good news. I can wait considering how the event has been treated by the Nine Network. Although i was thinking that it would be broadcast on 7Mate. I think its on 7two because of 7two trying to be BBC light. Still its great to get Live Wimbledon in SA.

  5. This sets an interesting precedent for the 2012 Olympics on channel 9.The question is will they utilise there 2 digital channels GEM and GO and show more than just the sports that Australians are in.Will it be Live. These are questions that id like to know the answer to.But cudos to 7 for at least putting the tennis on.Thats good enough for me be it HD or SD.

  6. A little bit sad as I like my 7two lifestyle line up shows. But its only for 2 weeks or so, will try and hang in there.

Though it is good to see a major sport live across Australia. You get a bit fed up in Perth having to have a delayed sport that’s shown live in the Eastern States.

  7. A major sporting event shown live on commercial FTA? Appropriate use of a digital multichannel? It’s like I’m living in the future! Shame they didn’t do this for the French Open but it doesn’t have the caché (or the audience) of Wimbledon.

  8. So they treat the Wimbledon coverage better than the Australian Open? It’s great the whole of Australia will get to see Wimbledon live, but would be great if they did the same for the Australian Open where night sessions are delayed for QLD / SA / WA. Hopefully this is an indication of how they’ll televise the Oz Open next year, starting live on 7TWO then moving to Seven at 7pm local time. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

  9. Great that Wimbledon is finally shown live on the multi-channel. Well done Ch. 7 – although would have been even better on 7mate in HD.
I just wonder if our friends in SA and WA will get to watch this live or delayed?

  10. Atleast the people who are intrested in it will get to see it at a decent time and hopefully it will take viewers away from nine because quite frankly nine dosent deserve any viewers because of the way that they treat them and i agree it should have been on 7mate

  11. The best news story of the year and can’t wait for 7pm live Coverage. Waiting until 11.30pm is now a thing of the past!!!!! Well done Seven.

  12. this is brilliant – well done 7..cant wait – after 9 butchered tennis for years this will be a treat ..and taking some commentary from BBC etc is a masterstoke…and hoarray..no Woodforde !!!!!! excellent…all 7 need to do now is take the finals of the french

  13. Good stuff from Ch 7, treating the public to watch tennis when it happens.

Ch 9 treated us like idiots, showing delayed matches but stating that it was “live”. Just say its a delayed telecast, Fred! Fred Stolle is the modern day Allan MacGilvary in perpetuating hoodwinks.

  14. this wouldve been perfect to put on 7mate. its high def and is supposed to be the blokes channel. blokes like sport, tennis is sport. why is it going on 7two? i think we can do without seeing mrs slocombes pussy for 2 weeks.
