Emmy snubs supernatural dramas

Which shows do US media think were snubbed by the Emmy nominations?

According to US critics, anything with a supernatural theme. True Blood, The Walking Dead and Fringe were all overlooked in major categories.

And some previous winners including Bryan Cranston and Kyra Sedgwick didn’t even land a nomination this year.

  1. Genre shows are generally ignored by the academy outside of technical categories (with the odd token exception), so none of that surprises me. The Tara snub is probably connected to its cancellation. The Emmys tend to acknowledge show which are either continuing or have naturally come to the end of their run. Kristin Chenoweth’s win for Pushing Daisies is the only exception I can think of in that regard.

  2. David, the reason Bryan Cranston was not nominated is because the 3rd season of Breaking Bad was part of the 2010 Emmy awards, for which it was nominated for best drama. Cranston won best actor, along with Aaron Paul for best supporting actor. This coming season, starting next week (season 4) is not eligible for this years ceremony, but will be for the 2012 awards.

  3. Of course Bryan Cranston didn’t get nominated. Season 4 doesn’t start until this Sunday, and he already picked up 3 consecutive awards for the first 3 seasons. Only 1 episode of 12 made it into the eligibility period.

  4. RE: Breaking Bad. S3 was nominated in last years emmy’s (though i think i recall it was snubbed by the golden globes). S4 will be eligible for next year’s emmy’s. And… breaking bad starts in america this monday!

  5. just so you know theres a timeline in wich shows are eligible for an emmy Breaking Bad doesnt come back til the 17th of july, meaning Bryan Cranston wasnt eligible for an Award but will be next year

  6. Well Bryan Cranston was not eligible this year. So no snub there. Game of Thrones filled in for the supernatural and fantasy genres, and well deserved too. John Noble deserved a nomination for Fringe, but he did so last year as well. Emilia Clark could probably have received a nomination for Game of Thrones too. Only Dennis O’Hare deserved anything for last season’s True Blood.

Community and its cast was the most egregious snub this year. Nick Offerman from Parks and Recreation is another shocking omission.

  7. Also the critically acclaimed Parenthood was shut out but on the Jason Katims (the show runner) did finally get some noms for his other show Friday Night Lights, shame it’s ended now.

The Emmy’s are notorious for snubbing shows on lessor networks like the WB and now CW. Buffy/Angel never got recognized in it’s 7 years, some for Gilmore Girls getting just one nom for makeup in 7 years and Lauren Graham getting nothing. They even changed the rules with her in mind a few years back to allow more ‘outsiders’ a chance at a nom and win.

SciFi is also an area thin on the ground when it comes to the Emmy’s. They love their high impact or rating shows, most others get cut out.

That said I am surprised shows like The Big C, Weeds and even Desperate Housewives got shut out.

  8. Did Breaking Bad even air in the past 12 months? Seems like a very long time between when S3 ended and S4 starting this weekend, so that’s possibly why Bryan Cranston didn’t get nominated.

  9. Anna Torv should have been nominated. She played 3 variations of her character and did an awesome job. She & John Noble should have been at the top of the list!

  10. I never expect them to nominate the genre type shows. It’s a bonus if they do. I think you left off Anna Torv from Fringe off the list. She played quite a lot of different characters without actually suffering from multiple personality disorder or even her character(s ) suffering from it. I think though I’ll always love John Noble and was so happy that at least the critics recognised him with an award.

  11. No new eps of Breaking Bad aired in the states from July 2010 to June 2011 (the new season starts in the states this weekend) so that’s why Bryan Cranston or Breaking Bad haven’t scored any noms.

  12. Considering Lost was barely nominated in it’s 6 year run. This years supernatural snubs, if unwarranted, are atleast consistent. I dont get what is so good about The Walking Dead seemed just a run of the mill zombie show to me, nothing particularly smart or creative worthy of a Emmy, but the production values were good.

I think the biggest snub is community and it’s cast.
