G-O-N-E after Season Three of Glee.

That’s the sound of Glee fans hitting the floor across the globe after Ryan Murphy confirmed three of the show’s biggest characters would graduate from the show by the end of the next season.

“You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticise you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“I discussed it with Lea and Chris and they both trust the writing and trust me. I think that they felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top. They also like the idea that it was very emotional, it will be very sad for me to see them leave. But it’s good because we’re writing to something so powerful, which is those two beloved characters going off and hopefully getting their dream.”

Jump the shark? Not really, but some fans on Twitter are already calling it “the end of Glee.”

Ouch.

Meanwhile Murphy addresses some other questions, including whether Chord Overstreet, who will be in the third season after all, is having stories crafted by the writers?

“Yes, we have. That was always our intent. I thought that was such a strange story. Every year there are options that are either extended or picked up or not picked up. I’ve never seen such a huge amount of stories about somebody’s option not being picked up – particularly when they were always, in my mind, coming back to the show,” he said.

Having been a fan of Murphy’s other work, especially Nip / Tuck, I have faith he knows what he’s doing by graduating these three characters. They dominate the Glee universe and the show has to broaden if it wants longevity. But what guts to go there….
