G-O-N-E after Season Three of Glee.

That’s the sound of Glee fans hitting the floor across the globe after Ryan Murphy confirmed three of the show’s biggest characters would graduate from the show by the end of the next season.

“You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticise you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“I discussed it with Lea and Chris and they both trust the writing and trust me. I think that they felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top. They also like the idea that it was very emotional, it will be very sad for me to see them leave. But it’s good because we’re writing to something so powerful, which is those two beloved characters going off and hopefully getting their dream.”

Jump the shark? Not really, but some fans on Twitter are already calling it “the end of Glee.”

Ouch.

Meanwhile Murphy addresses some other questions, including whether Chord Overstreet, who will be in the third season after all, is having stories crafted by the writers?

“Yes, we have. That was always our intent. I thought that was such a strange story. Every year there are options that are either extended or picked up or not picked up. I’ve never seen such a huge amount of stories about somebody’s option not being picked up – particularly when they were always, in my mind, coming back to the show,” he said.

Having been a fan of Murphy’s other work, especially Nip / Tuck, I have faith he knows what he’s doing by graduating these three characters. They dominate the Glee universe and the show has to broaden if it wants longevity. But what guts to go there….

  1. This is the end of Glee. Sorry but you can’t just replace these characters. I know that Skins has done it and a few other shows but seriously this is what makes Glee! Sorry Ryan but you have gone too far with this one. The next cast of Glee will never be the same regardless. Don’t think i will be watching after S3.

  2. These 3 annoy me so no great loss.I’m sure they’ll be replaced by 9 new cast members so more people can be under developed for the next few seasons

  3. It will be the end of Glee..these characters are the main reasons I watch the show. The last couple of seasons of Nip Tuck were very average..looks like Ryan Murphy runs out of ideas, but his new ideas to revitalise his shows are never great and are never as good as the first couple of series.

  4. Well this was to be expected.

If anything I think Lea would be pleased after all it’s apparently one of the toughest shows to be on it terms of it’s schedule and you just know she’s dying to go out and do bigger and better things…

  5. now they can get rid of that awfully boring Blaine character. The show just pandered to him and his fans this past year and it was a horrible season on TV.

  6. I’m happy that Rachel is going, she annoys the c**p out of me, very sad that Kurt is going. I think Britney is brilliant and deserves a lot more songs …

  7. I thought what they might do is have parallel storylines like in Lost. some episodes would feature the school with a new generation but then there are side storylines or special episodes that show what came of rachel and Kurt in New York. Rachel seems determined to move to new York and Kurt seems the the kind of guy that would want to get married so cannot stay in Ohio. Would be glad to see the end of Finn though.

  8. Brave move and a good one. Skins UK worked really well with the changing of the cast.

I think the spin-off option for Kurt and Rachel has some foundation and would solve a few problems for Murphy.

  9. The show should end at the conclusion of season 3 anyway. It jumped the shark with too much gimmicky stunt casting, poorly plotted theme shows, and very little character development last season.

  10. I love Glee, but I question if this is the right decision. I don’t think people are that interested in the show’s timeline. Hell, the kids on the Simpsons have been kids for over 20 years!

I think this decision could possibly be the sound of someone jumping over a shark…

  11. Spin-off with Kurt and Rachel living together in New York and trying to win a “starring” role on Broadway! I’d watch it. Surely others would as well.

Finn can a “special appearance” every now and again if necessary.

I don’t see any issues with the characters “graduating”. Although I was surprised that Kurt is meant to be in the same year as Rachel and Finn who I always thought were a year or two older than Kurt. Then again, I guess he had his own car in the first season, so it’s not that much of a surprise.
