MasterChef 2011: It’s Kate vs Michael!

It's official. MasterChef Australia 2011 will be a battle between Michael Weldon and Kate Bracks.

It’s official. MasterChef Australia 2011 will be a battle between Michael Weldon and Kate Bracks.

Kate beat Alana Lowes for the final place in tonight’s pressure test.

Both were tested to their limits by a spectactular gingerbread house by the Patissier of Pain, Adriano Zumbo.

The completely edible creation – featuring walls, chimney and roof of gingerbread covered in crunchy praline, roof tiles of salted caramel, isomalt windows and a garden of magic gum mushrooms and jellies – followed his croquembouche, macaron tower and V8 cake.

Kate’s gingerbread house was tasty but she took so long on it that it lacked a variety of sweets. Alana made more sweets but her roof was burnt and inedible.

In the end the judges gave it to Kate for the charm and taste of her house.

“I’m so incredibly happy. I can’t believe I’m in the finale,” she said.

Alana said, “If there was going to be any challenge to leave on this was the one because
everyone talks about Adriano Zumbo‟s dishes – and I had created one of them.

“I‟m really proud of that, and to be going home on the back of that felt, well, okay.

“I was so close to the finale. But I was actually a bit scared of the chance of going into the finale; there‟s a lot of expectation. Going out at number three – there‟s definitely no disappointment with that effort. It‟s been an insane ride; a crazy rollercoaster of emotions,
experiences and meeting amazing people.”

The two part final of MasterChef begins at 6:30pm Sunday on TEN with a one-hour cook-off and resumes with the announcement of the winner at 8:30pm.

The winner won’t be declared until after 9:15pm.

  1. would have loved to see Kate v Alana in the final… think they are both more all rounders showing they can cook great mains and desserts and handle the pressure well… have to wonder how Michael would have gone if he faced the Gingerbread house challenge, or any dessert challenge to get into the final??

  2. I just downloaded the gingerbread house recipe from the MC website. Am not even Thinking about cooking jellies( hello Coles 🙂 ) but will attempt everything else Sunday.
I may have it done in time for announcement of winner if I start at 9am :).

  3. Shine, the owners of the format, use the Australian MC as the model for all their
other franchises, even the U.K., so I totally agree with Chris about the annoying comparisons. This country already suffers way too much from cultural cringe.
Support our local industry and give credit where it’s due!

  4. @Fraggle – The judges said Alana’s roof was inedible due to it being burnt. All portions of Kate’s house were edible, and the judges have previously said that taste Always outdoes presentation…. especially if the house is derelict!!

  5. Alana appeared to intentionally attack the side of the house and then Zumbo reached over and broke some of the roof off because he could see it was burnt.

Remember this show is edited as well – just because someone said something to one person doesn’t mean they didn’t say it to the next one and then it got cut out during edit.

I agree that the charm of a ginger bread house is probably an important element – they should have sat them side by side and gone with whichever one drew their attention the most seeing as they both seemed to have an equal amount of failures otherwise.

The only reson they say E as A is bad grammar IMO. If you can read you should be able to pronounce it right. It is one of the most consistently annoying things on the show.

  6. @NJK – A curious transformation is happening to Victoria’s vowels, and it’s not going unnoticed. For a while now, many Victorians have been confusing “el” sounds with “al” sounds, so that celery sounds like salary, pellet like palate and telly like tally. They say Hallo, Walcome to Malbourne. In other words, Victorians don’t know if they’re Allan or Ellen, especially George! Got this information from Crikey’s Language Blog Fully (sic).

  7. I honestly think these Zumbo challenges have become stress tests – who responds best under the greatest pressure. Kinda like being a good chef I suppose.

  8. Sad that Alana left but Kate and Michael deserve to be there. That wasnt just a house that was a very fancy gingerbread house. They even had to make there own jellies. But Alana had that gap in her roof as well.

I wonder how much Adriano chages for those houses.

I feel sorry for parents out there when there child asks can me make that house. Im guessing its going to be popular.

  9. How does making gingerbread equal being a good “chef”? Kate was always going to win, and I’d bet my house (almost) that she’ll win the title. They don’t want a nerdy dork spruiking their brand, however good (or not) he is at cooking.

One more thing – how weird is it that the mispronunciation of vowels seems to be contagious on this show? It started with George calling Ellie “Allie”…then Dani got in on it and started calling all the “elements” she was cooking “allements”. Then Alana caught the bug and started doing the same thing. Bizarre.

  10. Yes another rig. Why wasn’t Alana judged by the sides of the house that even Zumbo said were perfect. Kate will win because she will make a better Woman’s Weekly cover and will be good for marketing, especially after last year’s duds. The show is fastly losing it’s credibility and in TV land that is death!

  11. @Justin agree with you. When Kate said hers was a disaster the judges gave her a pep talk. When Alana presented hers, they pointed out the gap in her roof. Why didnt they mention that Kate’s was glued together with 12kilos of chocolate? They said Alana’s lollies were perfect but Kate only managed to make two. It was obvious George isnt keen on Alana and it would appear thats why she’s gone home.

  12. @Donald

    Yeah. I a bit of a cynic.

Methinks this was the challenge where no matter what the outcome, they could pick Kate.

The only way Kate could have lost this challenge was to not put up anything

  13. Ok, conspiracy theory time (David, I would be surprised if this hasn’t crossed your mind as well!) Fremantle Media have intentionally set out to damage the Masterchef brand this year. Yes, they have to hand it back to it’s original owner after this series (said original owner happens to be Frenantle’s biggeset competitor as well) but they don’t have to hand it back at the top of it’s game do they?

  14. Hope Michael hasn;t quit his day job, he could not run a restaurant, he aint that good a cook, maybe a small takeaway, and the big announcement on Sunday where will the runner up be cooking, Gary or George’s restaurant??
