A contestant in The Renovators has quit the series before the first elimination.
Phil Mathers, 64, told the judges he didn’t want to be away from his wife for so long.
He told the group he wanted to leave because he believed he wasn’t able to make a total commitment to the competition, “I’d be letting the team down,” he said.
“I was nervous as to whether I was making the right decision. That’s always going to be in the back of my mind, but having considered it as long as I had and realising that there’s two people going to be eliminated, I feel I was doing the right thing.”
It was another example of a Reality contestant having trouble with the commitment required of series television.
That threw a spanner in the works, and a lifeline, as two contestants facing the first elimination became one.
Executive Assistant Laura Roberts, 37, became the first fully-fledged contestant to be eliminated from the show.
“I have mixed feelings about being the first to leave, but at the same time I’m excited to go home and get my dog back and just have a normal life again. But it’s really sad that I won’t be part of the madness of The Renovators. It’s been really fun and exciting, kind of like walking around blindfolded,” she said.
Teams of four now get their first look at the six houses with more challenges and eliminations to come.

Probably realised watching paint dry would be more interesting than being part of a reality show
@benji
No they didn’t really advertise in the ads, it came as a surprise to me as well
Also is it just me or doesn’t it seem as obvious who is going to go on renovators as it does on Masterchef
I’m sick of people getting through on these shows when they don’t really want to be there…
Did they play up to this in the ads for last night at all? It came as a complete surprise to me, but it did smack of being rather contrived and insincere.
Don’t watch The Block, Top Design, or The Renovators, but obviously if you are going to go on one of these types show, you don’t only have to feel your up to the task of the tasks on the show, but to also know you have what it takes to stand on your own two feet, and not a type that is going to miss your Mummy(feel in the blank to what that whatever could be) while you are on the show.
Is Brendan Moar still on it? I can not abide his smug presenting style and the moment I see him, I turn off. But I do love Robyn Holt. Great talent.
didn’t help the ratings. This show is a snore.
It is on the forms (without the piker bit)
The first question on the entry forms should be “Do you realise you’ll be away from home for considerable lengths of time, because we don’t want to waste time and money on a piker?”
