1986 movie sees TEN tank on Sunday

TEN's decision to play a 1986 movie at 8:30pm on a Sunday doesn't work with viewers.

Sunday night was a two-way tussle, due largely to the fact that TEN tanked -with its primary channel beaten by ABC1.

Seven won from 6pm to 8:30pm with Seven News (1.44m), Sunday Night (1.31m) and Wild Boys (1.22m). The drama has dropped from its debut of 1.67m but if it can settle at around 1.2m Seven will have enough reason to be happy. Bones was a healthy 1.26m.

Underbelly: Razor again won its slot on 1.4m. It has also dropped from its premiere but is holding up well, almost matching its 1.46m from last week. Other shows were Nine News (1.18m), RBT (928,000) and 60 Minutes (1.17m).

TEN’s best for the night was the season final of Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation on 855,000. The Renovators managed 614,000. But TEN’s idea to run a 1986 Aliens movie at 8:30 on a Sunday got the figures it deserved: 295,000. Is that some sort of primetime record? Dreadful….

Grand Designs Revisited (968,000) was best for ABC1 with Mrs Carey’s Concert on 515,000.

Best for SBS was Planet Egypt on 257,000.

The Good Life at 5:30pm was tops on multichannels with 379,000.

Seven won the night.

  1. Channel Ten programmer choosing Sunday’s movie: Hmm… “About a Boy” or “Happy Gilmore”? Don’t really want to play them more often than any episode of The Big Bang Theory on that other channel.

*dimly shining light bulb appears above head – I know! *pulls dusty box off shelf – Yes, a real classic! *Puts VHS tape in machine and presses Play…

Memo to All Staff Network Ten: Would the last person to leave please turn out the lights.

  2. @ JB….I have the same problem….there is a plethera of movies out there….but the networks just keep showing a mere handful….same old, same old…..maybe someone can explain to me …why?
Not everyone has every movie ever made on DVD/video/Blue Ray etc.
Two FTA movie channels would be nice….one for more modern movies…one for older type movies….

  3. Even a hacked to pieces Aliens screening is better than the crapola on Sunday nights… that said, can’t watch this in anything but HD so kinda desired those ratings. Honestly didn’t even know it was on…

  4. yeah, i saw the advertisement for aliens, and though why should i watch it cut and chopped up with ads? Great movie, just too good for that sort of treatment on a sunday night.

  5. I rarely watch movies on FTA, if i browse a program guide and spot a movie i have not watched for a while, it inspires me to watch it – but i will watch the dvd (or blu-ray) as opposed to waiting for the tv broadcast.

  6. Really no surprise here. It doesn’t help that there was no promotion for it whatsoever. Granted I watch significantly less TV than I did say circa 2005, but the only time I saw a promotion for it was… the hour before it airred, whilst my sister was watching Your Gen. I instead, watched Gran Torino anyway, as it is one of my favourite movies of recent history

  7. Bazza, I suggest you study Statistics. The size of the unbiased sampling they take for ratings is perfectly reliable and would accurately reflect the National viewing within normal tolerances. As someone whose area of study was Statistics, I always find it amusing when those untrained in its powers as a discipline question Stats because those stats don’t mirror their own taste. The most unreliable of Statistics is the Group Sample of One. Even the overall tastes reflected on this site are not indicative of the National taste, as this is not a random sample, drawn as it is from those who are inclined to this sort of site. This instantly makes it a biased sample. Google Random Sampling and read.

  8. I love Aliens, as many do. It is a modern classic. However, how many people that feel the same as me, are like me. I have the thing on DVD and Blu-ray. So wouldn’t watch it on tv. Even if i was like, oh Aliens, i’d still chuck in the blu-ray.

It seems one of those films that a large section of those likely to watch it, would own.

  9. Aliens? A modern classic and one of the greatest films of the past 25 years. Won’t hear another bad word against is, and I did watch the final 30 minutes of it last night.

But from a less subjective point of view, yes, the scheduling defies all reason.

  10. I flicked over and saw the opening bit and thought “Aliens? why?” It’s on their primary channel which is SD and many people who have the movie watch it on HD with a Blu Ray. This surely was a sign that no one really watchs films on a Sunday and on TV with ads

  11. Why aren’t ten airing Slumdog Millionaire, it was a 2008 movie so has been on the shelf for ages. And ten get all movies from Fox Searchlight. Would do much better than Alien what’s the bets slumdog will show up late night during summer.

  12. The last few weeks I’ve said how stupid Ten were for choosing to play kids movies at 8.30 on a Sunday night which understandably rated poorly. They finally pick an adult film, but one from 1986. And again their film bombs. Guess the Sunday movie won’t matter any more with Terra Nova starting, but there are plenty of movies from the past few years they could have played. It’s the same with all channels. There are so many films to pick, yet they recylce the same ones every few months.
