Big Bang “most loved” TV show

Research theorises that Big Bang is Australia's most loved show...

It’s an interesting theory…

The Big Bang Theory is Australia’s “most loved” television show, according to Roy Morgan Research.

It has pipped Packed to the Rafters in a study of Australians aged 14+ years asked about the show they “really love to watch.”

Two and a Half Men was voted third.

1 Big Bang Theory 13.9%
2 Packed to the Rafters 13.6%
3 Two and a Half Men 11.7%
4 Top Gear 11.6%
5 NCIS 11.3%
6 Spicks & Specks 11.0%
7 MasterChef Australia 10.9%
8 Bones 9.7%
9 Criminal Minds 9.4%
10 How I Met Your Mother 9.4%

According to the data MasterChef has dropped from second place from a year earlier, while Underbelly and Midsomer Murders are out of the top ten while Criminal Minds and How I Met Your Mother make an appearance.

Top Gear is tops with men while Rafters leads the pack amongst women. Blokes also like The Simpsons, Family Guy and the cricket, while women enjoy the crime/murder mystery genre (Bones, Criminal Minds, Midsomer Murders) and medical dramas such as Doc Martin and Grey’s Anatomy.

George Pesutto from Roy Morgan Research says: “There’s been quite a shake-up among the TV programs that people really love to watch, with Big Bang Theory knocking out Two and a Half Men as the #1 most loved TV show.

“In the latest 2011 data we’re seeing a number of programs with declining “really love to watch” numbers, particularly compared to the last couple of years.

“Since 2009 we’ve been seeing fewer men nominate some of the long standing favourites – such as The Simpsons and Cricket – as TV programs that they really love to watch.

“Whilst Top Gear remains a perennial favourite among men, its stable mate Top Gear Australia doesn’t fare so well, with less than 5% of men saying they really love to watch the Australian edition, compared to more than 17% for the British version.

“These results have implications for advertisers thinking about audience engagement and  wanting to be involved with TV programs that garner loyal, engaged, committed viewers – particularly male audiences.”

The results also contrast with television ratings, with Big Bang rarely winning at 7pm and Top Gear driven off Nine’s list of hot shows.

I can’t help but wonder when the questions were posed to the respondents.

Ask the same questions when Australia’s Got Talent was on air or the day after an episode of Paper Giants and I suspect it would net some different answers. Had Underbelly even been on air at the time?

Despite frequent questions about OzTAM’s pool, I suspect it is a more comprehensive reflection of our year-long tastes.

Still it’s interesting anecdotal results. What do you reckon?

  1. I’m quite surprised there is no Modern Family in the top 10, but maybe that is due to 10 constantly moving it around and prevernting it from establishing a good consistent audience.

  2. @ Dan – I just went there a second time and Renovators is still number one according to my interwebs – maybe you need to delete cookies?

  3. Either the polls are unrepresentative or we are (I suspect it is the latter!)
I agree that only 2-3 of that Top Ten are consistently good. Goes to show that the hidden gems on multichannels remain hidden. Where is the love for:
    Misfits;
    Community;
    Miranda?

  4. Of those shows i watch

Top Gear – who doesn’t like it?
Big Bang Theory, – it’s entertaining, but there’s much better comedies.
Masterchef – I watch more than I’d like to.
How I met Your Mother – it’s not always the funniest and things fall flat, but I actually really do like it. It captures something with the characters that is quite rare for this kind of show.

Of course comedies shows I love are

    It’s Always Sunny in Philedelphia
    Curb Your Enthusism
    Community
    Archer

    Things like
The Office, Parks and Recreation, Eastbound & Down are above big bang theory for me. Often all brilliant.

    Drama’s

    Game of Thrones
    Dexter
    Walking Dead
    Fringe

are all that’s really around these post Lost, post Battlestar, post Stargate days.

There’s ones I quite like, like Castle, but not really in the love category.

  5. What do I reckon? I reckon you’re right, David. When was the survey conducted? Who was surveyed and how were they selected (random telephone calls? people walking thru some mall in Melbourne?) and, more importantly, what was the actual wording of the question?

@Justin – impeccable taste there, Sir! Altho’ I’ve gone off #7 and never really got that into #8 or #9. I’d replace them with The United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie, and either Sons of Anarchy, Fringe, or Californication (mixed bag, I know).

  6. @Goonies

Actually looking at the IceTV most popular for the “last 365 days” and it goes:

    1. Top Gear
    2. MasterChef Australia
    3. ANC News
    4. The Big Bang Theory
    5. Play School
    6. The Simpsons
    7. Seven News
    8. Two And A Half Men
    9. The Block
    10. How I Met Your Mother

  7. Totally Surprised. As Much as I find Home and Away totally repulsive at the moments thanks to those River Boys I often find myself watching it due to 9 refusing to give us something fresh and new.Big Bang is fine if there is a new episode but the ones they show now can be bought on a box set at Virgin Megastore and have been shown many times over.
I am suggesting to Nine maybe goodbye Sheldon and hello Karl as it’s next fix to it’s ongoing 7pm problems with a Stefanovic/Leila McKinnon News/Chat Show

  8. No surprises with the difference between quantity and quality.
Just because people watch something doesn’t mean that they enjoy it.
They will still continue to watch bad programs hoping that they will enjoy it.

Much of this comes from the idea that companies care less about looking after the regular customers they have and more about the “potential” customers that they can lure away from other places. This obviously applies to banks and telcos. They will try anything to get you to sample their product, but ignore you once they have you.

That, and television is becoming more like politics every day.
The choice is less about making the best choice.. it comes down to what is the least objectionable choice. ie who is the least worse to watch, Kochie or Karl? rather than finding someone who is much better.

Channels that satisfy current viewers will be rewarded with loyalty.
A very rare commodity these days.

  9. I’ll admit I’ve only seen 4 of those series. Except for one of them probably less than 5 episodes. I’ll admit my current beloved show is Fringe. Not a surprise probably. Then there’s Doctor Who, Sherlock, Poirot. Some others I enjoy Castle, Supernatural, Star Trek : TNG, Chuck, MythBusters, The Vampire Diaries as well as documentaries.

Programmes I think important Four Corners, Media Watch, SBS World News, The 7.30 Report (when will the name be back? I miss it ) , The New Inventors, Local and national news, Lateline and whatever they call the ABC science show because they keep renaming it at the moment it’s Catalyst.

In the past I’ve loved Star Trek : TOS, Babylon 5, Classic Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes plus others. Some more normal shows were Happy Days, Bewitched, Columbo, Murder She Wrote, I Dream of Jeanie, Knight Rider, The Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s Island and many more.

  10. ‘while women enjoy the crime/murder mystery genre’
The only one I watch is Midsomer Murders?!?
Absolutely no interest in most crime type shows like the ones mentioned.

  11. @justin thats a good idea. My top 10 are below.

    1.Modern Family
    2.Community
    3.Chuck
    4.How I met your Mother
    5.Castle
    6.Spicks and Specks
    7.The Gruen Transfer
    8.Dexter
    9.American Dad
    10. Family Guy

  12. Interesting but not really accurate – it would seem nothing is!

At Ice Tv they have a most popular show list and the number one spot goes to The Renovators!!

So who knows what really is popular and what isn’t? I guess the longer smething goes the more popular it must be?

  13. Just goes to show im in the minority. Most of those shows i have never seen more than an episode or two of, some none at all.
    My comparative list would be
    1. Dexter
    2. Breaking Bad
    3. Community
    4. Game of Thrones
    5. The Walking Dead
    6. An Idiot Abroad
    7. Top Gear
    8. Curb Your Enthusiasm
    9. Modern Family
    10. Entourage (Seeing it just ended i think i will replace with Homeland, the pilot was brilliant)

  14. “The results also contrast with television ratings, with Big Bang rarely winning at 7pm “…
I love Big Bang…but I’ve seen every episode, most of them a number of times. I can get excited if a new ep is on, but if it’s one that I’ve seen a handful of times already I won’t watch it. I think that’s why it doesn’t rate at 7pm…it’s the 10th time that the episodes have aired.
