Kelsey Grammer will always be Frasier Crane

Kelsey Grammer's new series Boss is renewed for a second season before the first even premieres. But he'll always be Frasier Crane...

Will we ever think of Kelsey Grammer as anybody other than Frasier? He was just so damned good that even when he was on Back to You he was still cranky, skirt-chasing Frasier Crane morphed from radio to TV.

I guess he’s pretty distinct as Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons, but we’re not really as distracted by his mugging (and I mean that in the nicest possible way… I like Kelsey Grammer).

His next series, Boss has been renewed by the Starz Network before the first season has even premiered.

Grammer stars as Tom Kane, the mayor of Chicago who learns he is suffering from a degenerative brain disorder and only has years to live in the midst of his campaign.

It’s written by Farhad Safinia’s who wrote the 2006 Mel Gibson-produced Apocolypto. The Pilot was directed by directed by Gus Van Sant.

“The first time we read Farhad script, we knew we had to make Boss,” Starz President Chris Albrecht said in a statement. “With each episode, the story grew richer, and the cast continued to turn in breakthrough performances… For our viewers, we felt it important to start working on the next season as soon as possible.”

Perhaps playing drama not comedy will help? This is one time when I would happily eat my words…

It premieres in the US in late October. Haven’t heard any word of an Aussie network picking it up yet, but it is made by Lionsgate.

  1. As long as in this series they don’t inexplicably replace the actress playing his daughter after several episodes (“Back To You” reference, for anyone else who watched that show) then we’ll know it might last! Oh yeah – the renewal might help, too… 🙂

  2. I enjoy Kelsey when he plays sideshow bob on the simpsons. I enjoyed his character in cheers Fraiser Crane, however not the spinnoff. I dont know why but i just cant get into it. Maybe its complete overkill or something but i just cant latch on.

  3. Boss looks very interesting, I will definetely take a look if one of our networks ever picks it up.
Forget Frasier Crane, I lost all respect for Kelsey when I watched his fruitbat (now ex)wife Camille on the Real Housewives of Beverly HIlls. How anyone could be married to that piece of work, I really don’t understand.

  4. I accidentally stumbled across the trailer the other day whilst at IMDB and it looks very, very good. If the trailer is anything to go by David, I don’t think that there will be too much “Frasierness” in this series. Not that that’s a bad thing – Frasier is one of my all time favourite shows 🙂

  5. It is curious that this is yet another series that features the lead character with a terminal illness or major illness – Breaking Bad, The Big C and now Boss. Throw in Tara with her multiple ‘alters’, and it points to some heavy content. There are probably others, but it feels a little derivative. There’s no doubt Kelsey is a great actor, and it is wise to ditch the sitcome format, as nothing has come near his 20 year turn as Frasier Crane.

  6. @nrc_02
That’s how Frasier always looked when he was looking at Eddie!
anyway he’ll always be Frasier of course, just as Shatner will always be Kirk or Henry Winkler will always be The Fonz. That’s the way it is.

  7. I hope they find also a role for Niles (David Hyde Pierce) as the Boss’s neurotic brother.
After Frasier & The Simpsons I can’t really enjoy one without the other!

  8. I actually think this could be the role where he finally shakes of the shadow of Frasier. It sounds like a real dark departure for him and not just another Fraiser-like role.

  9. Same can be said about any long running character. Look at Friends with Matt Perry, in Mr Sunshine he was still being compared to Chandler. Or Lauren Graham after 7 years as Lorelai she’s still being compared to that character in her new (in it’s 3rd season) show Parenthood. I don’t think continual re-runs of the old shows help their cause.

BTW when I started to read the story I thought I missed something, then it said the new show hasn’t aired yet LOL
