Sam Stosur wins US Open

Samantha Stosur has become the first Australian woman in 31 years to win a Grand Slam title.

Samantha Stosur has become the first Australian woman in 31 years to win a Grand Slam title, defeating American Serena Williams at the US Open in New York.

The 27-year-old Queenslander won 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes at  Arthur Ashe Stadium.

She becomes the second Australian woman, after Margaret Court, to win the US Open women’s singles title.

Stosur won despite a controversial final in which Williams’ lashed out at the umpire.

“Aren’t you the one who screwed me over last time here?”  Williams roared.

“Yeah, you are.”
But Stousr remained composed and at the end showed her humility.

“I’d been dreaming about it ever since I knew what a Grand Slam was. This was a dream of mine to be here one day,” she said.

“I don’t really know what to say.”

Lleyton Hewitt was the last Australian to win a US Open, in 2001.

The game was broadcast live in Australia on Nine and FOX Sports.

  1. Awesome win Sam. I must admit I didnt thnk she would win the 2nd set. But congrats to her and im glad she got the monkey off her back.

Thanks 9 for doing something right this year and showing it live.

  2. @Bill Gates & others
FTA is not obliged to broadcast anything. They are in business and it’s pretty hard to return a profit trying to sell advertising in an event being played in a different time zone which will have a small audience. For you purists out there, it’s available if you want it- but Oh No!- you might have to pay! I wonder what so many of you complainants do for a living; based on so many of your gripes it’s obvious you just don’t understand profit is a requirement to continue provision of FTA television! It can’t be all things to all people, hence pay TV is there to fill the gaps…but I forgot, you want it all for nothing and still whinge about commercials, presenters, start times, end times, programming, sport, no sport, production values et al. Please find your remotes, push the off button, and get out more!

  3. Nice work by The Age on the front page of their web site today – “breaking news” with great big pic all about Serena’s outburst… and not a sign anywhere of Stosur’s stunning achievement.

Wonder what she did to end up on Fairfax’s bad side… 😉

  4. @DansDans… oh she is a c**t!
I was watching it live when she gave the death threat to the lineswoman, then massively back-peddled at the end of the game claiming she didn’t do anything wrong…. mate I saw it live and saw how she acted…. absolute spoilt brat who is bad for the game.

@ Madame Tango… no its not all FTA, just channel nein… jumping on the band wagon when it suits them. Look at how they treated Wimbledon? 7’s coverage of the tournament was way better then 9 ever did.
but speaking of FTA coverage, you should have seen all the shit 9 has been copping for their RWC “coverage”… they posted on their FB page the other day about the fact they were showing a game (Australia v Italy I think) and there was that many complains I think they had to pull that post of their FB Page….

Thank god for foxtel… alll in HD… 🙂

  5. Gold Coast radio stations went as far as putting up links so that locals could actually watch their girl in action. With her performances in the past 18 months you can bet Seven/Prime are rubbing their hands together for the Australian Open in January!
Is it me or is free-to-air losing the plot when it comes to sports programing??

  6. So my phone battery died during the night meaning my alarm didn’t go off, but when i woke up turned the tv on and it was 6-2 5-3 40-40, so i got to watch the last 2 points. Well done Sam. Great achievement.

  7. She played well and deserved her win. She lacks charisma and personality, but its nice to see one of the quiet ones win again. Womens tennis is wide open when compared to the mens, any of the top 30 can pull off a grand slam win, whereas probaly only one of the top 3 will win in the mens.
