US premieres by the numbers

2 Broke Girls begins well in the US but it's not so good for The Playboy Club.

How are some of the new US shows faring?

It depends. Like everything it depends on what network it was on (The CW for instance averages far lower than CBS), and whether there was any real competition on the night. Up All Night began with 10.9m viewers without much contest but a week later dropped tumbled significantly.

11.7m might sound good as a premiere figure, but after all the hype The X Factor was expected to do better. Simon Cowell had said anything less than 20m would be a failure.

If there is any trend in early figures it is that comedies are doing better than dramas.

Remembering that the 18-49 demo is more important than total people, here’s how some of the new shows stacked up in premieres.

Total People (millions):
2 Broke Girls CBS 19.15
Unforgettable CBS 13.98
Person Of Interest CBS 13.22
The X Factor FOX 11.72
Up All Night NBC 10.910
Revenge ABC 10.15
New Girl FOX 10.08
Charlie’s Angels ABC 8.74
Whitney NBC 6.71
Free Agents NBC 6.335
Prime Suspect NBC 6.00
The Playboy Club NBC 5.01
The Secret Circle CW 3.051
Ringer CW 2.721

Same, so glad that Channel 10 got Ringer. I can definitely see this doing well if paired up with the right show. Perhaps airing Thursday nights after Rush has finished- paired with new episodes of Law & Order: SVU?
And as for The Secret Circle, GO! has the show and I’m pretty sure it’s premiering very soon. 🙂

  2. Really bad news for 9 based on the breakdowns for Person of Interest – it bled viewers consistently over its hour, which doesn’t bode well for its ratings next week when it won’t have Big Bang Theory as its immediate lead-in.

  3. FYI – The Playboy Club will air on Arena from November 8, I did read that the international version (and DVD if it makes it) might have more nudity/sex because of censorship issues for network TV in the US.

  4. For those interested here is how the ratings stack up for the new shows in the 18-49’s demo which is what makes or breaks a show in the US. These are the finals for the show so some slight variation in Davids post. These are also premiere figures and doesn’t take into account 2nd episodes which have aired for some shows.

So early on 2 Broke Girls, New Girl, Up All Night, Revenge and Whitney are the ones people watched. The Playboy Club, H8R, Prime Suspect and Charlies Angels are the ones in trouble. A Gifted Man airs on Friday so its ratings are reasonable considering.

  5. @koverstreet, 13mil is not good or bad, it’s irrelevant. POI was CBSs biggest show for the fall and was placed in a slot that CBS traditionally does well in with CSI and it got a 3.1 for it’s premiere. A distant 4th in it’s slot even a small drop would seal it’s fate, the only chance it has is if it starts going upwards and the chances of that happening are very slim.

  6. @ jerome – why don’t you think POI will make a 2nd season? 13m is quite a good number. If it keeps those numbers or even drops off a little a 2nd season is a given.

  7. The Playboy Club is going to Foxtel, which was a bad move for them, as it’s basically a premium cable TV concept, that you can’t do very much with on sanitised US network TV.

  8. “18-49 demo is more important than total people”. Wrong. Its the only thing that matters. Those figures you have just provided are useless. Whitney, for example, was a bigger hit in 18-49 than Person of Interest, despite having less than half the viewers in total people.

  9. @Steve Sydney circle is going to go! But I wouldn’t waste my time on it, it will be axed soon.

Surprised to see the bland looking Unfotgettable doing good numbers while person of interest disapointed. The x factors ratings are a disaster, before it started the conservative predictions were double what it is getting. So far it looks like playboy, prime, charlies, agents and maybe person of interest will be the ones that do not make it to season 2. With playboy lucky to make it a few more weeks.

  10. Ha! Somewhere in the world Helen Mirren is laughing her ass off.
Considering what long running shows like Gossip Girl & 90210 rate the numbers for Ringer is good & it will get much more of a chance to survive on the CW.

  11. Considering the 18-49 demo rating matters most when assessing a program’s potential future (something you noted yourself), I’m not too sure why you posted total people figures anyway?

Up All Night had the benefit of airing straight out of the AGT finale on NBC last week. This week it moved to its permanent 8pm slot. Still scored a 2.4 demo rating and did better than many NBC programs this week.

  12. Poor Old NBC, they cant take a trick. With a bit of pre-launch controversy, you would have expect many more eyeballs than that for the Playboy Club, at least for the launch ep anyway.
While X-Factors numbers are softer than probably FOX would have wanted, it did win Wednesday and Thursday nights for FOX, the first time that has happened in a Premiere week in a long, long time. Be interesting to see Sunday nights ratings, The Good Wife, Desperate Housewives and Pan Am (my new fav show for the year) are all head to head at 9pm.

  13. Hmm interesting. Prime Suspect wasn’t that successful either. Will be checking out Person of Interest tonight and Unforgettable later in the week – they started pretty well. Does CBS always win that well?

  14. ‘2 Broke Girls’ sounds like a porn film.. have fun googling it I say.

Pretty low numbers for X Factor, doesn’t the UK version get the same if not more viewers than in a country with one-fifth of the population?

Personally I’m looking forward to Ringer the most. Glad it’s on TEN. Has it been announced who has The Secret Circle? That also looks interesting..

  15. So last night on the new Nine was bragging about the over 8 million Charlie’s Angels got, will they be telling viewers Person Of Interest, Unforgettable and 2 Broke Girls did so much better?

Shame Free Agents did so bad, I liked the pilot when I thought I wouldn’t, good writing and a great cast, nothing seams to be working for NBC at the moment.
