Zachary Quinto comes out

Actor Zachary Quinto has revealed he is gay in an interview with New York magazine.

Actor Zachary Quinto (Heroes, American Horror Story, Star Trek) has revealed he is gay in an interview with New York magazine.

Quinto casually dropped the detail while promoting his upcoming film Margin Call while referencing his recent eight-month stint in the stage production of Angels in America.

Quinto said that the Broadway role had made him realise how lucky he was to have been born before the AIDS crisis’ “decimation of an entire generation of amazingly talented and otherwise vital men” in the mid-’80s.

“And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed,” he said.

The matter of fact remark comes less that a year after he shut down a conversation with that very same magazine after deeming some of the reporter’s questions too personal.

Quinto’s latest series, American Horror Story, begins on ELEVEN on November 1st.

  1. @Alex…I have been regular reader of this great site for years,and someone who is a actor who comes out of the closet is news,it doesnt happen very often.And as David has said it has been reported on many many websites.David has always provided news stories with a mix of whats going on in all fields of the entertainment industry.Keep up the great work David. Cheers.

    1. Alex: TV Tonight actually began in the gay media, but in case you hadn’t noticed I file ‘big news’ under Top Story. This is a personal blog and as you can see by the timestamp here I devote plenty of attention to it for those who appreciate the mix of entertainment news, commentary, humour, insight, videos, observations, programming and more. If News Ltd and Fairfax are more to your style fair enough -but wait they filed it too.

  2. Next it’ll be Uncle Arthur from Bewitched; Gaylen from Planet of the Apes, the Commissioner from McMillan and Wife.
    Speaking of gay, someone told me the gay guy from Talking About Your Generation (or Your Gen as 10’s promo people would call it) is actually from Brisbane. What’s up with his accent? Truly bizarre. Perhaps has watched Family Guy too much.
    This one’s for you, David! You need a laugh in the serious business of blogging.

  3. Everyone knew it… although good on him for not letting it get to the Anderson Cooper level of denial…

    @John from Sunny Coast – agreed, there seems to be an abundant supply of gay men viewing this blog. Fabulous!

  4. How is it not news worthy for a TV news site? He was a major character on heroes, will be on American Horror Story and has protrayed in film one of the most iconic TV characters of all time, Spock. Now, if the New York Times ran this as their front page feature perhaps you would have a vaild argument.

  5. This just in:
    Famine ravage the Horn of Africa;
    Financial meltdown continues in Europe;
    Protesters rage against Wall Street; and finally tonight,
    self absorbed, egomaniac actor feels the need to come out of the closet. No one cares.

    Film at 11.

  6. See and the world didn’t end. It’s not a big deal. Good on him. And I love that the article is not a “coming out” feature, it’s just casually mentioned in an interview.

  7. Yes, I read somewhere that he was gay ages ago and it implied he was already open about it. Was rather surprised to see it as “news” on SMH this morning…

  8. it’s a matter of fact remark, because it’s not really a big deal & shouldn’t be made out to be a big deal by the media. He is still an great actor, gay,straight, bi, whatever.

  9. Good on him. He’s a terrific actor – going from Heroes to Star Trek – and it doesn’t make him any different (except for the gender of person that accompanies him to his movie premieres).

  10. I thought everyone already knew this. Wasn’t he dating that guy from Glee? What he wrote was nice, though it will be interesting to see where his career goes from here.

  11. Better late than never.

    I wonder whether this means even more make-out sessions for Spock and Uhura in Star Trek 2 since TPTB will want to avoid any possible “teh g@y” interpretations of Kirk and Spock.
