Holden dumps Kyle & Jackie O following verbal attack on journalist

Updated: Holden has withdrawn its radio sponsorship of Kyle and Jackie O as Kyle issues a reserved apology to a News Ltd journalist.

Holden has withdrawn its sponsorship of Kyle and Jackie O’s Austereo programme following comments made by Kyle Sandilands about a review of Kyle & Jackie O’s Night with the Stars.

A statement issued by Holden says: Recent comments made on the Kyle and Jackie O Breakfast Show do not in any way reflect the views or opinions of Holden and we are very disappointed to hear Kyle’s personal attack on a journalist.

We believe the show is no longer in line with Holden’s core values and as a result we have taken action to withdraw our sponsorship of the program, effective immediately.

Sandilands blasted News Limited’s online deputy editor, Alison Stephenson after her review branded the Seven show “a disaster.”

On his Austereo radio programme he called Stephenson “some fat slag… a fat bitter thing … a piece of shit” and attacked her appearance.

“Change your image, girl. Watch your mouth or I’ll hunt you down.”

The Federal Minister for the Status of Women, Kate Ellis, said Sandilands’s latest outburst was part of a “sustained pattern” of attacks on women.

“All Australians, including women, are entitled to be treated with respect at home, in the workplace and in the community,” she said.

“This latest personal attack on a journalist who was simply doing her job is another example in what is a sustained pattern of disrespectful and offensive attacks on women.

“While some may hold out hope that Kyle Sandilands will one day reform his rude and entirely inappropriate approach, to my mind a much easier solution is for Australians to just turn off.”

ACMA this morning confirmed it had received ”several” complaints about Sandilands’s comments yesterday, but an investigation was not under way because complainants first had to contact the broadcaster directly, spokeswoman Emma Rossi said.

Seven is yet to issue any comment.

UPDATED: On his radio show today Sandilands denied he was a woman-hater.

“We live in a country of free speech, you’re allowed to say what you want and so am I,” he said.

“Whether you’re male, whether you’re female.

“I treat everyone equally. It doesn’t matter your gender, your race, your sexual preference, you’re equal as far as I’m concerned.

“If you took a personal offence to it Ali I’m sorry, but maybe you should think again before you start going [against] different people.

“If they say I can dish it out but I can’t take it, I never ever dish it out first.

“I always retaliate due to someone else’s crazy, outrageous allegations.

“You can have your personal opinion, but I will also have mine because that’s the country we live in.”

“If we’re all really equal, how can these people bring up these things and turn it into such a male versus female thing.

  1. Can I just add why no one is questioning the whole $1 milliion winner a few weeks back and how rorted that was!?

Background check on the girl who seemed to have the luck of a Chinese water dragon playing lotto please.

  2. Basically Kyle has a simple strategy when it comes to life:

One Step Forward, then shoot yourself in the foot.

Good to see he’s consistant, unfortunately this moron will still around Monday.

  3. @Sedi – are you for real? You obviously read a completely different review from the one I did. “a Lot of it was personal against Kyle and Jackie” – really? A lot? I couldn’t find one sentence that fits that bill unless you’re referring to one of the few tweets that were quoted.

All of the review is about the show and the response to it, and it is fair, accurate, and balanced. It even includes some concessions about Kyle’s ability to obtain the so-called big names. You obviously have a different dictionary from mine because “scathing” means a lot more than “includes some negative comments”. Your use of the words “taunt” and “snidy” (not actually a word) are at odds with there real meanings, too.

There is no “cover up” here other than some comments attempting to defend the indefensible by a few misguided and ill-informed fans. As for “ludicrous”, it is you who is being ludicrous by asserting that it is perfectly acceptable for Sandilands to demean the woman’s appearance and to physically threaten her just because “she started it”. Started what? Nowhere does she have a go at his physical appearance or the clothes he wears.

Sandiland’s comments are doubly inappropriate given that White Ribbon’s Stop Violence Against Women Day is this Friday. Hamish and Andy are on-board, where’s Kyle? Oh, that’s right. He’s threatening to hunt down a woman who made the mistake of writing an honest review about his horrible little show.

  4. I have been a long-term supporter of Kyle from back in the day when he took over from Ugly Phil to host the nightly Hot 30. I have podcasted his show for many years and listen while I jog. There’s a reason he earns more than any other announcer at austereo – he is the most talented radio broadcaster because the show is always unpredictable, exciting, and fast-paced. However, his latest comments are completely unacceptable and he has lost me as a listener. I have always defended him to others but this time he’s gone too far and I have lost all respect for him. If he doesn’t publicly apologise I will never listen to his show again. Sure I’m only one person, but if a lot of long-term fans also stop listening then 2DAY-FM and the advertisers will have to take notice.

  5. This could seriously be it for Sandilands. He wasn’t saying this stuff to shock. It’s what he’s really like. He’s a menace. He should be working in a morgue, but then I’d be nervous for the corpses.

  6. It will be very interesting to see whether the companies that have pulled advertising are straight back on board once they think this is all forgotten and the new ratings season rolls around in 2012.

  7. How ironic is it that this is all happening on the week where we have White Ribbon Day, a day where we remember how unacceptable violence against women is …

  8. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Kyle Sandilands in Australia. How is idiot still has a career is beyond me. No, actually, it isn’t – he is consistently indulged like the golden child by both 2Day and Seven. Their lack of either comment or action in this is completely unacceptable, given the disgraceful nature of what Sandilands said about this journalist. He actually made a threat against her (“hunt you down”). Why the hell is he able to get away with this? Hopefully, the Radio Broadcasting Authority will come down on him like a ton of bricks. I don’t recall him ever attacking men in this fashion – it is always women (Magda Szubanski, female Idol contestants and now this journalist).

  9. Oh please he’ll get a slap on the wrist and and it’ll take all but a week to find a new sponsor.. Ford perhaps??

Sydney seems to be an over the top lucrative business for radio for some reason. Kylie’s show is giant in the ratings and has been for years, there’s simply too much money that generates from this platform and it seems no amount of scandal can overshadow the bottom line profit of the Austero network

  10. Has anyone paused to think that if the radio ratings system was as accurate as the television system, 2DayFM’s Kyle and Jackie O show would show a similar audience – i.e., a significantly lower than perceived number of listeners? For those unfamiliar with the way radio ratings are measured, in brief, it relies on the physical ticking of boxes in a diary by a tiny sample audience who are required to remember what they listen to. Very, very dodgy.

  11. I can’t believe both 2DayFM and Seven are staying quiet on this. If this were any other network star, apologies and excuses would be raining down, while said star would be taking time off to focus on their ‘health’ and entering rehab to learn to deal with their personal reaction to criticism. Seriously, imagine if a ‘Rafter’ reacted to negative reviews this way or H+A star responded to such attacks with blatant bullying.

Kyle gets away with it, because ‘it’s Kyle and that’s what he does.’ That’s a sorry state and the excuse of he’s successful so we can’t touch him doesn’t apply. The ratings were average at best and X-Factor minus Kyle this year was just fine ratings wise, so why Seven feel compelled to silence is beyond me.

  12. Im not a huge fan of the show, but the reality is is that if this writer on news.com.au has the nerve to write such a scathing review (a Lot of it was personal against Kyle and Jackie, not the show) she should expect his backlash against her. Dont taunt them and then be surprised when they bark back in the same way. And then to cover it up by saying he is ‘disrespectful against women’ is just ludicrous.

The reality is – she started it with her snidy comments about them. He responded with equal force.

  13. Dear (estimated) 200,000 people who actually made it though the show:

Please Complain to Seven and get this taken of the air.

Oh, and then Stop watching it kthx.

    Sincerely,
Everyone with a modicum of taste and decency
