Holden dumps Kyle & Jackie O following verbal attack on journalist

Updated: Holden has withdrawn its radio sponsorship of Kyle and Jackie O as Kyle issues a reserved apology to a News Ltd journalist.

Holden has withdrawn its sponsorship of Kyle and Jackie O’s Austereo programme following comments made by Kyle Sandilands about a review of Kyle & Jackie O’s Night with the Stars.

A statement issued by Holden says: Recent comments made on the Kyle and Jackie O Breakfast Show do not in any way reflect the views or opinions of Holden and we are very disappointed to hear Kyle’s personal attack on a journalist.

We believe the show is no longer in line with Holden’s core values and as a result we have taken action to withdraw our sponsorship of the program, effective immediately.

Sandilands blasted News Limited’s online deputy editor, Alison Stephenson after her review branded the Seven show “a disaster.”

On his Austereo radio programme he called Stephenson “some fat slag… a fat bitter thing … a piece of shit” and attacked her appearance.

“Change your image, girl. Watch your mouth or I’ll hunt you down.”

The Federal Minister for the Status of Women, Kate Ellis, said Sandilands’s latest outburst was part of a “sustained pattern” of attacks on women.

“All Australians, including women, are entitled to be treated with respect at home, in the workplace and in the community,” she said.

“This latest personal attack on a journalist who was simply doing her job is another example in what is a sustained pattern of disrespectful and offensive attacks on women.

“While some may hold out hope that Kyle Sandilands will one day reform his rude and entirely inappropriate approach, to my mind a much easier solution is for Australians to just turn off.”

ACMA this morning confirmed it had received ”several” complaints about Sandilands’s comments yesterday, but an investigation was not under way because complainants first had to contact the broadcaster directly, spokeswoman Emma Rossi said.

Seven is yet to issue any comment.

UPDATED: On his radio show today Sandilands denied he was a woman-hater.

“We live in a country of free speech, you’re allowed to say what you want and so am I,” he said.

“Whether you’re male, whether you’re female.

“I treat everyone equally. It doesn’t matter your gender, your race, your sexual preference, you’re equal as far as I’m concerned.

“If you took a personal offence to it Ali I’m sorry, but maybe you should think again before you start going [against] different people.

“If they say I can dish it out but I can’t take it, I never ever dish it out first.

“I always retaliate due to someone else’s crazy, outrageous allegations.

“You can have your personal opinion, but I will also have mine because that’s the country we live in.”

“If we’re all really equal, how can these people bring up these things and turn it into such a male versus female thing.

  1. Enough … Kyle is not funny, his “trained monkey” called Jackie is also not funny … the new show was self indulgent and a waste of time and money …
He needs go away and live off his millions he has made from being a mindless clown and get off our screens and airwaves.
Stop paying him a fortune to offend and hurt people!
Bullying of any kind is unacceptable, and the TV Radio industry need to make that very clear!

  2. So it is ok that everyone can Call Kyle every name under the sun, but as soon as he says something deemed rude, his head is all of a sudden on the chopping block. Lighten up people and take a look at the words you are using against Kyle.

  3. From my understanding, Holden didn’t actually pull their advertising at all, but merely moved it to another timeslot, so 2Day won’t be losing any money, which means it’s business as usual for Kyle.

That so-call ‘apology’ he made this morning was an absolute joke.

  4. This fool must have a medical condition that no one knows about. How can one guy keep opening his mouth to shove in booth feet. I fail to see how (why) he has a job in media circles. I would never employ him. You just never know when he will go off the rails.

  5. Never listened to them on Radio.
    Didn’t watch them on TV.
Seems I made the right choice.

Of course we live in an “economy” these days, not a society with morality so the moeny will win out.

  6. It has been reported in today’s online Daily Telegraph paper that Sandilands has been “instructed to apologise”. Pathetic. I doubt whether there will be even a shred of sincerity in it. He should be disciplined and suspended. 2Day will never sack him as he is a one man publicity machine, even if it is bad publicity. To those justifying his actions by saying the journalist provoked him, you’re wrong. The article, as was its right, criticised the style and format of his show, it was not a targeted personal attack on him, yet he responded in a bullying, threatening manner. A true professional would be well above responding to criticism in this manner.

  7. Oh lighten up people, Kyle is a shock jock, it’s what he does, if you like him as I do and find him funny, then keep listening and enjoying him. However I suspect most of you don’t listen to him anyway, so your anger towards his comments will make no difference to his popularity. He says what he thinks, and I find that refreshing 🙂

  8. Seriously?

Does anyone actually think that Kyle would hunt down and kill this journalist? I mean really? Talk about taking someone’s (admitidley misguided) heat of the moment rant at face value.

But what else can we expect in the current age of over reacting media. The News.com story was over the top in its reporting. They wanted Kyle to bite and he did. All that means is more hits for news.com

I mean really that website is trash jouralism t it’s best.

But the over reaction by groups is laughable, suddenly Kyle is some woman hating abuser. Pull you head in people. It was heat of the moment, get over it.

  9. I’m no Kyle fan, but the tone of the review was quite uncalled for. When else has a review taken such glee in a program’s failure? C’mon people, that infographic was designed to bait him up, and Kyle’s reaction was nothing if not predictable. Sure, what he said was wrong, but if you pull a dog’s tail and it bites you you’ve only got yourself to blame.

  10. 2day fm won’t take them off the air for good. just look at the lie detector thing. 7 love him enough to give him a stupid show, so i doubt they’ll dump him

  11. I have signed a petition on change.org to have ghim removed from radio.
Channel 76 are pathetic in their response..but what else would you expect from a station that produces a program thatlies and defanes people like This day tonight ” does.
